The Citroën C4 went on sale in the UK in late 2004 with a fairly comprehensive range of 3 and 5 door hatchbacks. Engines were 1.4, 1.6, and 2.0 petrols (including a 180 bhp one in the 3dr VTS). Diesels engines were 1.6 HDI (92 & 110 BHP) and 2.0 HDI (138 BHP). Trim levels were LX, SX, VTR+, Exclusive and VTS I think. Automatic gearboxes are available with the 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines in the 5 door, and more recently a semi-automatic 'box was introduced as an option with the 1.6 HDI (110) diesel engine. I have driven one of these, and it seems to work very well.
Generally, this is a very good car. It handles well, and the ride is particularly smooth for a car of this size and price. It has some interesting standard features such as the steering wheel with the fixed hub, which also has stereo controls and cruise control/speed limiter on it. The car has an digital centre speedometer, and personal experience tells me that the lower powered 1.6 HDI diesel is particularly economical.
On the down side, this is a typical Citroen. In other words it doesn't feel wonderfully well put together, and if you don't like rattles it certainly isn't a car worth considering. The reliability of the electrical items isn't what it might be either.
The MPVs based on the C4 have now launched in the UK - 5 and 7 seater C4 Picasso. I believe that there is a 4 door saloon version that is either on sale, or will be going on sale before too long, in selected European markets. I don't believe there are any plans for an estate, though I may be wrong on this point.

Recent Changes
- For the 2009 model year, the C4 recieves it's first mid-cycle facelift. Besides the design tweaks, the updated C4 will host a list of upgrades inside and out. Among which are a new velour or leather upholstery, repositioned rev-counter, the inclusion of Citroen's new “MyWay” sat-nav replete with a hi-res 7 inch color screen, Bluetooth® and USB connectivity and new audio system with a 10GB hard drive built-in. Changes can be found underhood as well. The new C4 drops the 1.6i 16V and 2.0i 16V units in favor of two new engines co-developed with BMW. Both the petrol engines have a displacement of 1.6 litres, the first is a normally aspirated unit 120hp Vti with Variable valve lift and Timing Injection while the 150hp THP (Turbo High Pressure) mill churns out 150hp. - On June 7, 2007, Citroën released the sedan version of it's C4 line to follow up its successful hatchback coupe.
- On the 17th of August 2007, Citroen unveiled the C4 BioFlex.

Design quirks and oddities
The speedo is housed in a translucent digital instrument display panel that is as clear as day even in the brightest daylight.
Fixed centred controls steering wheel which stays upright even when the steering wheel is turned. Looks very cool, but is functional as it ensures that the driver’s airbag always deploys at the correct angle, which is a world first.

- The C4 was named the Best Overall Design in the 2005 Wheels Magazine Automotive Design Awards.
