The modern Opel GT debuted at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and continued in the tradition of the original Opel GT that was produced from 1968 untill 1973. Although both generations are small, two-seat sports cars, the major difference is that the modern version is only available as a convertible and the previous version was only available as a coupe. The new Opel GT is based on the same General Motors "Kappa" chasis as the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky and is also manufactured at the same plant in Wilmington, Delaware.

Although the car will be sold in the UK as the Vauxhall VX Lightning, it will maintain the left-hand drive position as the Opel GT sold in mainland Europe.

Styles and Major Options

The Opel GT currently comes in only one bodystyle and one trim level. The standard engine is the 2.0 Liter 4-cylinder and there is no optional engine. This is different with the GT's sister cars where they use the turbocharged 4-cylinder for their more sporty models and the normally-aspirated 4-cylinder as the base enigine.
