Safety
The 2003-2005 Aviator was not tested by the NHTSA, although its mechanical twin, the Mercury Mountaineer was. The following scores are for the 2003-2005 Ford Explorer and were sourced from safercar.gov
Note: The Lincoln Aviator is equipped with standard side airbags for both front passengers, therefore, the side impact results of the Ford Explorer are incorrect. It is expected that the Aviator would score higher in the side impact test because of its side airbags.

Future
Originally, the Aviator was supposed to be on hiatus for the 2006 model year, reappear based on the Ford CD3 platform. However, Ford scrapped the Aviator name, and will be replaced by the mid/compact-based Lincoln MKX crossover SUV, which was unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. The MKX will be available for sale in the fall of 2006 as a 2007 model.
