He received his BA (Hons) Industrial Design in 1989 at Teesside Polytechnic. In 2006, his alma mater awarded him an Honorary Master of Science. After graduation, he began working for the Rover Group and then joined Designworks USA as a senior designer after the Rover Group was swallowed up by BMW.
