He received his BA (Hons) Industrial Design in 1989 at Teesside Polytechnic. In 2006, his alma mater awarded him an Honorary Master of Science. After graduation, he began working for the [[Rover Group]] and then joined [[Designworks USA]] as a senior designer after the Rover Group was swallowed up by BMW. Later, he worked as a chief designer for [[Ford]] and its mainstream divisions, [[Mercury]] and [[Lincoln]]. This allowed him to come into contact with Aston Martin and has since been its DoD after being promoted in 2005.
