The Nissan Frontier is a model of pickup truck assembled by Nissan and sold under the Nissan brand name. Nissan was the pioneer of the compact pickup truck market in 1959, joined in the 1960s by Mazda and Toyota. Since 1959, Nissan is known for a number of notable firsts in the compact pickup truck market, including the first extended cab bodystyle (in the 1979 Nissan King Cab) and the first crew cab bodystyle, in the 2000 Frontier. Frontiers are currently built in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Recent Changes
After having been redesigned for the 2005 model year, the 2006 Frontier remains largely untouched, save for a few new options.

Styles and Major Options
There are four major trims available for the Nissan Frontier: the XE King Cab, SE King Cab/Crew Cab, NISMO King Cab/Crew Cab, and LE King Cab/Crew Cab. With the exception of the XE, which is only available in a two-wheel drive King Cab, all of the trims are available in a varying combination of two- or four-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmission, and either King Cab or the larger Crew Cab. ==Hybrid Models==
There is no hybrid model of the Frontier.

Unique Attributes
Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, the four-cylinder 2WD XE King Cab is projected to retain 58 percent of its value after a 2-year period, while the 4WD SE Crew Cab is expected to hold an impressive 67 percent.

Criticisms
*No V6 engine available
*No standard cab available
*Turning radius larger than preferred
*5-Speed automatic transmission shifts hard under heavy acceleration

Current Generation: (2004–present)
Initially, the Frontier was considered compact, but beginning with the totally-redesigned model year 2005 Frontier (introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show), it become more mid-sized. It uses the new Nissan F-Alpha platform and resembles the company's full-size Nissan Titan truck.

The new truck's wheelbase is 125.9 in (3.20 m) with a 205.5 in (5.22 m) overall length. Towing capacity is 6500 lb (2,950 kg). A 4.0 L VQ-family V6, the VQ40DE, is the standard engine, and it produces a respectable 265 hp (198 kW) with 284 ft·lbf (385 N·m) of torque. Also available is the QR25DE four-cylinder engine, which is also found in the Sentra SE-R Spec V sports sedan. A six-speed manual is standard with a five-speed automatic optional. Both rear and four-wheel drive are available. Traction control and hill-descent control are also available.

First Generation/Origins
The Frontier was introduced in 1997 for the 1998 model year as a replacement for the aging Nissan pickup. Nissan first offered the Frontier with a 4-cylinder engine, the KA24DE, but added the 6-cylinder engine, the VG33E in 1999. The truck was available only in a standard cab offering at first, but a king cab configuration was also added in 1999.

That changed in 1999 with the 2000 Frontier Crew Cab. The Crew Cab was the first compact pickup to offer a 4-door bodystyle. Until that point, crew cabs were heavy duty versions of full-size trucks and were mainly used as commercial vehicles.

For 2001, Nissan facelifted the Frontier, introducing bolder styling in an effort to make it more appealing to younger buyers. The Frontier was completely redone after the 2004 model year.
Recent Changes
It is noted espcially for its use of a unibody frame: unusual in pickup trucks, as well as "car-like" features such as a large "trunk" below the truck bed. The bed is integrated with the body, similar to the Chevrolet Avalanche. Anti-lock brakes, stability assist, side airbags and side-curtain airbags are standard equipment. In concept, the Ridgeline shares much with such vehicles as the car-based Chevrolet El Camino, Ford Ranchero, and the Subaru Baja. The Ridgeline also has a large rear seat with easy folding operations.

When considering the purchase of a new vehicle, it's important to keep in mind what the eventual resale value will be. It is expected that the Honda Ridgeline will have a high resale value, as it has only been on the market for a year, and carries the Honda name.
* "...the engine lacks the deep torque of a V8 for strong off-the-line pulling." - Cars.com
* "Stability control and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard, though grippier tires would help both handling and braking." - Automobile
* "There is no driver-side vanity mirror and no power adjustment to the passenger seat - though for this kind of money there should be." - Cars.com
Generations
First Generation/Origins (2006–present)
The Ridgeline was released in March 2005 as a 2006 model. It is currently one of the best selling trucks in the midsize, 4wd, 4door, shortbed segment. It is rated with a 5,000 lb towing capacity and a 1,100 lb bed capacity. It's unibody combined with a ladder frame chassis gives it 2.5 times more bending rigidity and 20 times more torisional rigidity than any other truck in its segment.

From the first B-Series pickup truck, Mazda has used the engine displacement to determine the name. Thus, the B1500 had a 1.5 L engine, and the new B4000 has a 4.0 L V6. For 2002, the name was changed to simply Mazda Truck in the United States. Mazda's partnership with Ford has resulted in the sharing of this vehicle—the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger are essentially the same after 1994.

In Japan, Mazda uses the Proceed name on its compact pickup trucks, and another line of larger trucks is available called the Mazda Titan. Other names used for this line include Mazda Bravo (Australia), Mazda Bounty (New Zealand), and Mazda Drifter (South Africa). However, it should be borne in mind that the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger twins found inside North America are unrelated to the ones sold elsewhere. Those are engineered by Mazda, whereas the North American models are developed by Ford.

According to Autoline Detroit, the Mazda B Series is the worst selling vehicle currently on the market.

1972
The B-Series was introduced to the United States with the 1972 B1600. It was joined in 1974 by the similar rotary-powered Rotary Pickup. The engine was enlarged to 1.8 L for 1977's B1800.

Engines:
* 1972-1976 - 1.6 L (1586 cc) I4
* 1977-1979 - 1.8 L (1796 cc) 1800 I4

1980
The 1980 B2000 used a 2.0 liter F/MA engine, replacing the B1800. The 2.2 L B2200 joined this truck in 1982. The US B-Series continued through 1985, one year past the international version, though the 2.0 L engine was updated that year.

The B-2000 was also available in a long bed version which was given the model name Sundowner - a reference to nomadic Australian herders who would make camp wherever they were at sundown.

Engines:
* 1980-1984 - 2.0 L (1970 cc) F/MA I4
* 1985 - 2.0 L (1998 cc) FE I4
* 1982-1985 - 2.2 L (2209 cc) I4

1986
A new B-Series was introduced in 1986 and was produced until 1991. A 4-speed automatic transmission was the primary choice, with a 5-speed manual transmission through 1990. Part-time four wheel drive was another option. The 2.6 L Mitsubishi-powered B2600 was introduced in 1987. This year also saw the Mazda straight-4 enlarged to 2.2 L in the B2200, with the smaller engine phased out after that year. The Mitsubishi engine was gone for 1989, replaced by a new family of Mazda powerplants.

Engine options:
* B2000
** 1985-1986 - 2.0 L (1998 cc) FE I4

1992
The 1992 Proceed/B-Series was updated again but had a short life in North America, where it was replaced by a Ford Ranger twin in 1994. However, this version continued to the end of the decade in most other countries, including Japan.

1994
The North American 1994 Proceed/B-Series was new, the design having been merged with the Ford Ranger. Mazda continued to manufacture its own trucks in Japan and elsewhere, but for the North American market, the design was shared, as were the engines. The new B3000 and B4000 boasted large Ford V6 engines, and the manual transmission returning to the options sheet. Extended cab models were available, as was all wheel drive, and two trim lines, LE and SE. The 3.0 L B3000 was dropped for 1997, and the entire line was refreshed after that year.

Engine options:
* B2300
** 1994 - 2.3 L (2311 cc) OHC I4, 98 hp
** 1994 - 3.0 L (2983 cc) Vulcan V6, 140 hp
** 1995-1996 - 3.0 L (2983 cc) Vulcan V6, 145 hp

1998
North America saw an entirely new Ranger/Proceed/B-Series again for 1998, with a larger base engine. An available 5-speed automatic transmission was a novelty. The 1999 B-Series added four doors, a first in the extended-cab pickup truck market. A refresh and updated 4.0 L V6 came in 2001.

The Toyota Tacoma is one the best selling compact pick-up trucks available in the U.S. It is manufactured in NUMMI plant in California, which also makes the Toyota Corolla and is known for high quality and employee involement. The Tacoma, which is an Indian word for Mount Rainer, was originally introduced in the U.S. market in 1995 in an effort by the Toyota Motor Corporation to compete more aggressively in the compact truck market. Since its introduction, the Tacoma has been through several iterations, the latest major upgrades occuring in 2005 which earned it Motor Trends "Truck of the Year" award.
Unique Attributes
In addition to its rugged off-road models, Toyota developed a high performance version of the Tacoma, the X-Runner. The X-Runner name comes from its exclusive "X-braced" reinforced frame that provides enhanced rigidity. This sports-truck is powered by a 245-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine, which allows for acceleration form zero-to-60 in under seven seconds. The X-Runner has full ground effects surrounding the vehicle, a hood scoop, and integrated fog lamps. It is only offered in three colors: Radiant Red, Black Sand, and Speedway Blue. The X-Runner suspension was lowered one inch versus the standard Tacoma frame and comes with 255/45R18 Bridgestone Potenza performance tires on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Resale Values
Toyota dealers generally won't haggle too much on price but because of Tacoma's reputation for quality and reliability, late model used Tacoma's sell for almost as much as new ones.

Criticisms
Current Generation: (2005–present)
* The new Tacoma’s are larger than the previous generation. The Regular Cab 4x2 models are built on a new 109.4-inch wheelbase (an increase of 5.9-inches). The 4x2 Access Cab models are on a 127.2-inch wheelbase (an increase of 5.3-inches). The new Double Cab long-bed models are on a 140.9-inch wheelbase.

* Front and rear track have been widened by nearly four inches.

* The Tacoma Access Cab models received new dual rear access doors.

* Rear doors on Double Cab models are more than three inches longer than before and open to 80 degrees.

* Tacoma offers a stronger, stiffer chassis and improved maneuverability.

* New suspension and steering tuning improve off-road performance and on-road ride and handling.

* Two new engines are available: a new 2.7-liter VVT-i DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces 164 horsepower and 183 lb-ft. of torque and a revised 4.0-liter VVT-i DOHC V6 that produces 245 horsepower and 282 lb-ft. of torque (replacing the 190-hp 3.4-liter V6 in the 2004 models). Both feature a new Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i) that helps improve performance and fuel economy.

* Towing capacity improved with the V6-models which can now tow up to 6,500 pounds, a 30-percent increase over the 5,000-lb towing capacity of the 2004 V6 models.

Second generation (1995-2004)
* The all-new model had a driver-side airbag, and featured new interior and exterior styling.

* Tacoma had three engines available, two 4-cylinders and a V6. The new engines included a 142-horsepower dual-overhead-cam 2.4-liter, a 150-horsepower dual-overhead-cam 2.7-liter, and a 190-horsepower dual-overhead cam 3.4-liter V6.

* The Tacoma also came with a redesigned chassis and suspension and came with rack-and-pinion steering in place of the previous recirculating ball system.

* Later came a new off-road package that included a locking rear differential.

* In early 2000, the 4-door Double Cab was introduced with four front-opening doors and a 60/40 folding rear bench seat. All models got a restyled front end with a raised hood and prominent grille. Also added was a new S-Runner model--a manual-transmission V6 PreRunner Xtracab with stiffer springs, premium shock absorbers, color-keyed exterior, and special interior appointments.

First Generation/Origins
The original Toyota pickup was the 1935 G1, which was a 1.5 ton stake-bed commercial truck. After World War II, Toyota returned with a compact pickup truck, the Toyopet Model SB. This remained in production from 1947 through 1963. Toyota entered the American market with the 1964 introduction of the Stout. It was larger than the similar Datsun and Mazda compact trucks at the time, and looked like a Chevrolet C/K. The Hi-Lux name was coined in 1969, but it was a “highly-luxurious” vehicle only when compared to the Stout. The only body style was a regular cab short bed and all were rear-wheel drive. In 1975 the Hi-Lux name was dropped and replaced by “Pickup Truck.” There were many iterations of the “Pickup” Truck from the mid 70’s all the way up to 1995 when the Tacoma was introduced as Toyota’s ninth generation pickup.
The Ford Ranger name is used on two distinct and unrelated pick-up truck lines by the Ford Motor Company:
* The North American Ford-designed compact pickup truck (documented here)
* The Mazda-designed compact pickup (documented at Mazda B-Series (International)) sold in more than 130 countries

North American Ranger
In North America, the Ranger is Ford's entry-level pickup truck. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was used on versions of the Ford F-Series. The current line of Rangers was introduced in 1982 for the 1983 model year. It replaced the Ford Courier, an Americanized version of the Mazda B-Series. The compact Ranger was styled after the full-size Ford pickups, and is also offered with a four wheel drive option. The Ford Ranger is currently offered as a 2.3 litre I4, a 3.0 litre V6, and a potent 207 horsepower 4.0 litre V6. All transmissions are 5-speed w/overdrive and come with a choice of manual or automatic.The FX4 version comes with an 8.8 inch rear end, 3 skid plates, and Bilstein shocks. Prior to the 1983 model year, "Ranger" was a trim package available on full-size Ford pickups. This truck uses code R1 (for 2-door) and R4 (for 4-door) in the 5th and 6th positions of the VIN. The Mazda - Ford - Mazda truck saga came full circle in 1993 when the Mazda B-Series truck became a rebadged Ford Ranger in North America. Both vehicles are manufactured at Ford's Saint Paul, Minnesota Twin Cities Assembly Plant, which is scheduled to close in 2008. Ford's future product plans in the compact pickup market segment are expected to be announced closer to the end of Ford Ranger production in the Twin Cities, in 2008.

Electric Ranger
The Ford Ranger EV was a battery electric vehicle produced by Ford Motor Company. It was produced starting in 1998 through 2002 and was built on the two wheel drive Ranger's chassis.
