The Toyota Tundra was introduced in 2000 as Toyota's full-size pickup. With each subsequent year, Toyota has improved upon it, eventually earning it recognition as a top-notch competitor in its class. The most recent update was in 2005, when it received some cosmetic touch ups and more powerful engines. It remained basically unchanged for the 2006 model year, but a redesign is expected for 2007.

Low Points
*Not as big or powerful as some competitors
*No 3/4 ton model
*No diesel option
*Rear seats are cramped
*Bland styling

Performance and Handling
The Tundra is available with either a 4.0L 236hp V6 engine or a 4.7L 271hp V8. Though this is a bit less than some bigger, more powerful competitors such as the Nissan Titan, it's still respectable and it makes up for it with other perks. One of them is that the Tundra drives smoothly and delivers tight handling. Smaller than some of its competitors, the Tundra also has a relatively impressive turn radius for a pickup. Vehicle Stability Control and traction control should also provide some stability to the ride.

Gas Mileage
Of 13 rated full-size trucks on Autos.com, the most fuel efficient Toyota Tundra ranked 6th overall. This, of course, does not reflect the various trims of the truck, which all have varying statistics. The city/highway mileage for each of these, as reported by FuelEconomy.gov, are as follows:
*V6 2WD automatic - 18/22
*V6 2WD manual - 16/20
*V8 2WD automatic - 16/19
*V8 4WD automatic - 15/18

Safety
The NHTSA performed safety tests on all three styles of the Tundra, with the exception of the double cab, on which side impact results were not available. In these tests, all received 4/5 stars for front driver impact, 5/5 stars for front passenger impact, and 3/5 stars for rollover. The regular and access cabs also received 5/5 stars in side impact tests.

Reliability and Maintenance
The Tundra is one of the highest rated pickups as rated by Consumer Reports, even with an overall rating of just 67, which still falls under CR's "Very Good" category. Most aspects of the truck have proven to be reliable since its introduction in 2000, with engine problems being improved upon by 2003. Overall, Automotive Information Systems has given the Tundra its green rating, and with Toyota's reputation, the improvements are sure to come with future models.

Interior and Comforts
The Tundra comes available in three different forms, a Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Extended Cab. While the Regular Cab only features a front seat, the Access Cab and Double Cab both offer a rear seat. The middle seat in the rear is also equipped with a shoulder strap seat belt as well as a head restraint for added safety.

Some of the interior options available, depending on trim, in the Tundra are leather seating, heated front seats, simulated wood dashboard inserts, a floor console, rear door bins, cruise control, and power loocks, windows, and mirrors.

Exterior
As with its interior, the Tundra's exterior differs from trim to trim. The Regular Cab only features a front seat but it makes up for it by having one of the longest beds in the half-ton class. The Access Cab shortens the bed and includes a rear seat area, and the Double Cab extends the overall length of the truck to include a complete rear seat area.

Tundra styling has always been simple, and although it has received some updates in recent years, many still complain about its lack of flair. In this day and age, when consumers want even their utility vehicles to possess a bit of pizazz, the Tundra stands out from the pack only in that it remains relatively simple amongst its more flashy peers.

Regular Cab possesses one of the longest beds in the half-ton class, making it ideal for moderate hauling. The Tundra in general, however, is not well-equipped to handle heavy duty jobs, one of its few drawbacks. Ground clearance is good at 12.3" and makes for a satisfactory off-road experience.

Styles and Options
There are three styles of Tundra available in various trims: the Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab. All are available with either a V6 or a V8 engine, and 4WD is optional for all as well.
High Points
* Fun to drive
* Great gas mileage
* European exterior styling
* Good list of options for reasonable price

Performance and Handling
Mazda has designed a vehicle for everyone in the Mazda3, whether a family of four needs a new sedan or an adventurous driver in search of more power. For the former, any of the i- or s-model Mazda3 trims will be more than sufficient, with a choice between a 2.0L 148hp engine or a 2.3L 156hp engine and a tight suspension that leaves the driver in control. For the latter, the Mazdaspeed3 would do nicely, with its powerful 2.3L 263hp engine, MacPherson struts, sport-tuned exhaust, and Mazda's Advanced Torque Management System.

The Mazda3's handling is surprisingly crisp and responsive, even at high speeds, and its acceleration and brake response are both excellent. Many reviewers were impressed by the performance of this compact car, and as fun as it is to drive, it should certainly succeed in attracting significant attention.

Gas Mileage
In a Compact Car category that includes the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, and Honda Civic Hybrid, the Mazda3 ranks 10th in fuel efficiency, as ranked by Autos.com. Mileage will vary, dependent upon engine and drivetrain. The city/highway numbers for the different versions of the Mazda3 are as follows:
* 2.0L 4-cyl. manual - 28/35
* 2.0L 4-cyl. automatic - 26/34
* 2.3L 4-cyl. manual - 26/32
* 2.3L 4-cyl. automatic - 25/31

Safety
Test performed by the NHTSA yielded mostly good ratings for the Mazda3. In front impact and rollover tests, the Mazda3 earned 4/5 stars, while it received 3/5 stars for its side impact results.

Some of the standard or optional safety features found on the Mazda3 are 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger front airbags, occupancy sensors, and side impact bars.

Reliability and Maintenance: 5 Stars
With proper maintenance, which is reasonably priced (approximatley $100 every 10,000 miles excluding regular oil changes), the Mazda3 performs well day in and day out.

Interior and Comforts
For someone less than 6' tall, this compact car is extremely comfortable. The drivers' seat offers lumbar support as well as vertical and horizontal adjustments. The gear shift sits at a comfortable distance from the drivers' seat, as do all controls.

Some of the options found across all trims are air conditioning, cruise control with steering-wheel mounted controls, power locks, and driver adjusted lumbar support. Options such as a sunroof, leather seats, heated seats, and a safety options package are all available for extra cost as well.

Exterior
This car is very well styled for a compact vehicle under $20,000. It looks much more like a European compact car than a Japanese econo-vehicle. It's sporty, with a bit of an aggressive look to it, comprised of angled edges that sweep backwards and a stance that seems to lean just a bit forward.

Even the hatchback has been designed to look more stylish; the Mazdaspeed3 trim, after all, is only offered in hatchback form. This trim in particular features a rear spoiler, larger and wider wheels, and foglamps.

Styles and Options
The 2006 Mazda3 comes in three major trim models: the 4-door sedan, 5-door hatchback, and the hatchback Mazdaspeed3. With the first two, you have a choice between one of two engines and either a manual or automatic transmission, all of which will have an impact on the price of your Mazda3. The sedan is available in i- or s-models, whereas the hatchback is only available in an s-model, and aside from base models, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring packages are also available.

However, the Mazdaspeed3 might be considered its own model, for it is equipped with a much more powerful engine and more sporty options which are not available on either the Mazda3 i or the Mazda3 s. The Mazdaspeed3 is powered by a 2.3L 263hp I4 engine and comes with features like 18" aluminum alloy wheels, rear roof spoiler, standard heated front seats, a Bose premium audio system, and automatic climate control. The Grand Touring version of the Mazdaspeed3 adds even more standard features.

Some of the options found available on the i-models are 16" silver alloy wheels, air conditioning, SIRIUS-ready stereo system, cruise control, and power locks and windows. With an upgrade to the s-model, buyers may opt for 17" wheels, halogen fog lamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leather seats.

Main Competitors
* Ford Focus
* Toyota Corolla
* Honda Civic
* Honda Civic Hybrid
* MINI Cooper
* Volkswagen Jetta
* Pontiac Vibe
* Toyota Prius
