The Honda Pilot is arguably the best SUV on the market, balancing value, features, and performance. The Pilot has three rows of seats and both the second and third rows can split 60/40 to be folded flat. This configuration results in an impressive 86.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is about 30% more than the Subaru Forester. The Honda Pilot SUV can tow about two tons, and has excellent traction for snow-covered roads or light off-roading.

The Pilot is ranked #1 in several categories for the Mid-Size SUV class on Autos.com, placing it ahead of the Volkswagen Touareg, Nissan Murano, Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and Jeep Grand Cherokee, among others. These categories include Reviews, Resale Value, Passenger Space, and Safety.

See also the main fact sheets for the Honda Pilot.

High Points
*Good safety ratings
*Good resale value
*Plenty of cargo space when 3rd row is folded down
*8-passenger seating
*Reduced cabin noise

Low Points
*In high demand, which means limited availability
*Certain options are mutually exclusive
*Seat bottoms are short
*Not as powerful as some of its competitors
*No optional V8(see above)
*3rd row seating stifling for larger passengers
*Awkward stereo controls
*Lack of low-range gears
*Poor handling

Performance and Handling
The 4WD model of the Honda Pilot is equipped with a 3.5L 244hp V6 VTEC engine. Its 240 lb.-ft. of torque allow it to tow 4,500 lbs, not superb for its class, but not too shabby either. The 4WD itself is automatic, designed to kick in when road conditions demand it.

The 2WD version of the Pilot makes use of the same engine as the 4WD model, but with an i-VTEC enhancement, which adds Variable Cylinder Management. What this does is enable three of the engine's six cylinders to be deactivated when their power is not absolutely necessary (such as when cruising), thereby cutting back on fuel consumption and decreasing overall emissions.

Gas Mileage
FuelEconomy.gov lists the gas mileage of 2WD Pilot models at 18/24 MPG and that of the 4WD models at 17/22 MPG.

According to Autos.com, this is enough to rank the Pilot 5th in gas mileage out of 23 vehicles in the Mid-Size SUV category.

Safety
The Pilot performed very well in each of the NHTSA's safety tests. In both Frontal and Side Impact crash tests, it received 5/5 stars, and testing for Rollover earned it a 4/5 star rating.

Several safety features can be found standard on all models. Some of these include electronic stability control, front and rear anti-roll bars, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and front and side impact airbags.

Reliability and Maintenance
*The Pilot has average reliability, but not-so-good maintenance costs.

Interior and Comforts
As it was based on the same platform as that of the Honda Odyssey, the interior of the Pilot should prove to be surprisingly comfortable. Reviewers remark on its feeling very much like an Acura, Honda's upscale marque, with its seating and instrument panels built from sturdy, quality materials. In addition, features like the optional heated seats, steering wheel touch controls, and DVD navigation package, which also equips the Pilot with an on-screen rear view camera display, add a touch of luxury to the ride. This last feature, however, is also a bit of a drawback, as prospective buyers must choose between either the DVD navigation package or the seatback DVD entertainment package; they are not available together.

The Pilot is also surprisingly roomy inside, despite its modest but convenient exterior size. Cargo space is plentiful, and with both the second and third row of seating folded down, total storage capacity increases to an impressive 87.6 cubic ft, with a maximum width spanning 4ft. across. The Pilot can seat 8, but the third row is small, and while it will accommodate children quite comfortably, adults may find the space to be cramped and restrictive.

Exterior
The Pilot exhibits a clean, simple finish, from its subtle, body-colored side moldings to its alloy wheels. Its front fascia and rear styling bear a striking resemblance to its brother, the Honda Ridgeline pickup, adding a rugged element to its interior sophistication.

Though there are few exterior distinctions between trims, the EX and EX-L models do come equipped with a handful of features not found on the LX, such as roof rails, fog lamps, body-colored side mirrors and door handles, and a tinted rear windshield. However, its looks still remain fairly conservative, and car shoppers may find more to be excited about once they've taken a seat inside.

High Points
*High safety ratings
*High resale value
*Decent towing capacity
*Plenty of cargo space when 3rd row is folded down
*8-passenger seating
*Reduced cabin noise
*Carlike handling

The Ford Explorer got its start in 1990 and is still being produced, making it one of the longer running SUVs on the market today. While the recent automotive trend, particularly in North America, has tended towards building crossover SUVs based on car platforms, the Explorer remains true to its roots. It continues to look and feel more like a truck than a car, but improvements to its suspension and interior have increased its comfort level higher than before. With impressive cargo space, a powerful engine, and good towing capacity, the Explorer aims to appeal to those who want an SUV that feels like an SUV, and as the top-selling SUV for the past 15 years, Ford is certainly doing something right.

*Improved engine and suspension
*Easier to enter and exit the vehicle
*Third row seating
*Good towing capacity
*Affordable

Low Points
*V6 may not be powerful enough for some
*OK Fuel Economy
*Styling unexciting
*Ride not built for comfort/luxury like many crossovers

Performance and Handling
Two new engines are available for the 2006 Ford Explorer. The 4.0L V6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210hp and 254 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is the traditional 4.6L V8, but now it has three valves per cylinder, two intake and one exhaust, for better breathing, a whopping 53 additional horsepower at 292, and 300 lb-ft of torque.

With the V6, you get a 5-speed overdrive automatic. With the V8, you get a brand new Ford-built 6-speed automatic overdrive transmission with full electronic control of upshifting, downshifting and torque converter functions. While the V6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, both powertrains are quiet and smooth, and both are very pleasant, competent, and quiet rides.

The new steering on the 2006 Explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is as supple as any in its class, and the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before.

Gas Mileage
The gas mileage the Explorer will get depends on its engine and transmission. The city/highway numbers as reported by FuelEconomy.gov are as follows:
* 2WD V6 automatic - 15/24
* 2WD V8 automatic - 15/23
* 4WD V6 automatic - 15/22
* 4WD V8 automatic - 14/21

Safety
According to the NHTSA, the Explorer got supberb 5-star ratings for all front- and side-impact crash tests. However, in safety tests for rollover, the Explorer performed less impressively, earning 3 of 5 stars.

The Explorer received a blow to its reputation in 2000 because of a controversy involving Firestone tires. Due to some industrial negligence (many blame both Ford and Firestone for this), there was a particularly high incidence of tire tread separation, which often lead to vehicle rollover. The situation was rectified, but because of the negative publicity, the Explorer is now equipped with several safety standards to improve its image in that category.

Some of these features include 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger front- and side-impact airbags with occupancy sensors, side impact bars, and an overhead canopy airbag system.

Reliability and Maintenance
Although Automotive Information Systems reported that the 2002 Explorer had moderate problems with its engine, transmission, and brakes, Ford cleaned up its act and earned a green approval rating in every category from the same organization just a year later, in 2003. Since it was redesigned in 2006, however, reliability data for the newest incarnation of the Explorer is not yet available.

Interior and Comforts
Unlike the exterior, which is discussed below, much of the interior of the redesigned 2006 Explorer is brand spanking new. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed to a crisper, much more modern presentation, one of Ford design boss J Mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the Eddie Bauer version, and the graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending on trim.

Second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. The third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. It's always a 50/50 split seat, but it's available with manual or power folding and unfolding.

Some of the variations, besides the third row, that are available on the Explorer include driver and front passenger heated seats, 8-way power seats, leather interior, a sunroof, and metal or simulated wood accents.

There are, however, a couple of downsides. From certain angles, there is a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top and onto the windshield, which can make for a bit of a distraction and safety hazard. Also, as with most similar SUVs, the third row, when included, is relatively small. Children and pets will do fine back here, but taller adults will find the space restrictive and uncomfortable.

Exterior
The Explorer was redesigned for 2006, but because part of its success has come from familiarity, this latest model looks only slightly different from its predecessor. In fact, the Explorer's styling has remained fairly consistent since its introduction. Sure, a few edges have been rounded off, the headlights and taillights have become more stylized, and its body has been made to look a little more aerodynamic, but the Ford Explorer still looks distinctly like a Ford Explorer.

As for changes in the newest model, the 2006 Explorer looks like the F-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. There are four different grilles and stock wheel styles to distinguish the various trim levels. The combination of more chrome, bigger and bolder lamps and the new square-cornered aero mirrors make it look more like a Lexus SUV than a Ford (that's a good thing). They don't want you to mistake it, though, so every 2006 Explorer badge is about twice as big and twice as thick as those on 2005 models.

Overall, the Explorer remains stylistically plain and simple. What it does have going for it, however, is the aforementioned familiarity. Those who have come to love the Explorer will take one look at it and feel they know what they'd be getting. It's certainly not an ugly vehicle, but while it's not the most chic, its target market should find it to be just what they've come to know and love.

Styles and Options
The 2006 Explorer comes in four trims: the XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer edition, and Limited. Standard and optional features will differ, of course, depending on the trim selected. However, a Control-Trac automatic full-time four-wheel rear-wheel drive transmission is standard across all trims, and while the XLS is only available in a 4.0L 210hp V6 engine, the other trims are available in a choice between the V6 and a 4.6L 292hp V8 engine.

Standard equipment on the XLS includes Roll Stability Control (RSC), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, AM/FM stereo with single CD or MP3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

The XLT adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage.

The Eddie Bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. It is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The Luxury Package on the Eddie Bauer adds $1700, an audiophile sound system, six-disc changer, steering wheel controls, power passenger seat, heated power mirrors, and puddle lamps.

The Limited adds its own four-bar grille, 17-inch tires and wheels, monochromatic appearance package, heated seats with memory, still more wood and more leather and a few more small amenities.
* 2WD V8 automatic - 15/21
* 4WD V6 automatic - 15/20
* 4WD V8 automatic - 14/20

High Points
*High safety ratings
*Improved engine and suspension
*Easier to enter and exit the vehicle
*Third row seating
*Good towing capacity

The Mercury Grand Marquis is a Full-Size Rear-Wheel Drive Luxury Sedan made by Mercury and manufactured at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Canada. It was also built in St. Louis, Missouri until 1985.
The Grand Marquis is still the sales leader in its class. The Grand Marquis is almost never used in fleets unlike its counterpart the Ford Crown Victoria which as of 2008 is only sold to fleets. The Grand Marquis is also the only vehicle sold in Canada that still wears a Mercury Badge. The Grand Marquis is also Mercury's best selling vehicle ever, with over 4 Million sold since 1975.

Overview
The Grand Marquis is essentially a luxurious version of the Ford Crown Victoria. It comes in two trim levels; GS and LS. The trim level can be identified by the fifth, sixth and seventh digits in the VIN. A Grand Marquis GS is represented by "M74", while a Grand Marquis LS Premium is represented by "M75".

The Grand Marquis shares the same "Panther" platform as the Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and the former Mercury Marauder. The Town Car will soon share the same manufacturing plant with the Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria when Ford's Wixom factory is closed. Current models are powered by Ford's 4.6L SOHC V8 engine, which produces 224 hp, (239 hp with handling/dual exhaust package). The only exception for power output was the Mercury Marauder, the Grand Marquis' high performance cousin which was powered by a DOHC version of the 4.6L engine and produced 302 hp (224 kW).

Power is carried to the rear end by a four-speed electronically-controlled, wide-ratio automatic transmission. This transmission is known as the 4R70W, and is the successor to Ford's AOD and AODE transmissions of the early 1990s.

Mercury has always been marketed as a step-up from the Ford brand and has historically been more performance and luxury oriented. There are indications of that in the Grand Marquis. Properly equipped, the large sedan can be both a comfortable semi-luxury sedan while still offering adequate performance.

The Grand Marquis remains quite affordable, priced well below similarly well-equipped entry-level luxury sedans. Prices for the Grand Marquis range from $25,830 for the GS to $28,720 for the LS Premium.
Recent Changes
New for 2007 is the Palm Beach package which includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated exterior mirrors with chrome fronts, cashmere leather seats with embroidered "Palm Beach" logos, side impact air bags, unique satin applique on the instrument panel and door panel, "Palm Beach" badging, and 16" 9-spoke chrome wheels. Also the lineup has been simplified to just GS & LS Premium. There is also the option for a conventional spare tire and an auto dimming rear view mirror. An Audiophile 6 disc in-dash changer with an 8 speaker configuration is available. The engine is now E85 fuel capable.
Fourth Generation 2003-Present
2003: The Grand Marquis received a facelift and new rear fascia, along with refreshed interior door panels (including door handles and power window/power lock control switches) and an optional overhead console (standard on the LS Series). However the real changes were under the skin, with the second generation of the Panther platform. An all-new hydroformed frame was engineered, rack and pinion steering replaced the old recirculating ball system, and the front and rear suspension, as well as the brakes, were redesigned. An engine knock sensor was made standard along with a six-quart (5.7 L) oil pan (20% larger than the 2002 model). The wheels were redesigned with a high positive offset. A quiet EBD brake booster with a mechanical panic assist system was added. Other changes included an intake manifold with aluminum water crossover and an electronic returnless fuel system. Side airbags were also made available and a dual media (cassette/CD) player made standard. More minor changes included a redesigned engine cover with a chrome V8 logo, the oil fill was moved to the passenger valve cover and the power steering fluid reservoir moved to the radiator surround (previously on the front of the engine). A shoulder belt was put into place for the rear middle passenger and a valet key was made standard.

2004: No major changes were made. The option/standard list was modified.

2005: A number of changes were made for the 2005 model year. An electronic throttle control system was put in place, moving the cruise control function to the main computer. Occupant weight sensors were added, which could disable the passenger airbag. Other changes included two new front crash severity sensors, a new steering column and two-spoke steering wheel and the addition of a mast antenna on the right rear fender. Interior changes included new wood trim, chrome interior door release handles and an Audiophile 6 disc in-dash CD changer (optional on the LS Series), The LSE trim was added mid year. The steering wheel lock feature was eliminated.
2006: For 2006, the front end was refreshed. This included a new, rectangular grille, bearing a likeness to the 1980s models. Fog lights were now an option. Interior changes included a new steering wheel and dash layout, as well as a new instrument cluster, which featured the addition of a tachometer and digital odometer/tripmeter. The mast antenna on the right rear fender was integrated back into the rear window and new wheel designs were made available. This was the first year for the 4R75E transmission.

Also the lineup has been simplified to just GS & LS. There is also the option for a conventional spare tire and an auto dimming rear view mirror. An Audiophile 6 disc in-dash changer with an 8 speaker configuration is available. The engine is now E85 fuel capable..

1998: The Grand Marquis received an exterior refresh, including new front and rear fascias, grille, hood, headlights, cornering lights, taillights, bumpers, door mirrors and wheels. There were a number of small interior updates, such as a new two-spoke steering wheel, green LED backlighting, a black column shift lever and turn signal/wiper stalk arm (previously chrome), and a Gentex auto dim rear view mirror with an integrated compass. A single CD player became available, as well as an eight-way power passenger seat with lumbar support. The analog gauges now had red pointers, instead of the orange ones in previous years.

A number of mechanical changes were also made. A fail-safe cooling system with a dual speed electric fan was put in place, along with a coil-on-plug ignition system. Larger dual piston brake calipers were added to the front, hence 16 inch wheels were now standard. A Watt's Linkage Suspension was added to the rear. Fuel lines were moved to the passenger side frame rail. A coded ignition key (known as Passive Anti-Theft System [PATS]) system was introduced and a 72 amp/hour battery replaced the previous 58. Other minor changes included a redesigned engine cover and the power steering fluid reservoir being moved to the front of the engine.

Second Generation 1992-1997
1992: This was the first year for the 4.6 L SOHC modular V8 engine. The car was also completely redesigned, with its angular shapes replaced by a new aerodynamic body. The new rounded design was then highly regarded for its light weight and low wind resistance, which led to increased fuel efficiency. The interior was redesigned, with new door trim and seats. Four-wheel disc brakes were made standard, along with speed-sensitive power steering and a 19 gallon fuel tank. Rear air suspension was optional, along with a keyless entry system.
1993: A front passenger's side airbag was made standard. An overdrive button was added on the end of the shifter.

1994: Side impact protection was added, allowing the car to comply to future 1997 standards.

1995: This was the first year for the 4R70W transmission along with an OBD-II compliant computer. The vehicle received an exterior refreshing, along with a choice of new wheels. The interior was also redesigned with a new dashboard, seats, door trim panels, and door-mounted power seat controls. 10 inch front seat tracks were standard. A 2.73 rear axle ratio was made standard, over last year's 3.08. The power antenna was integrated into the rear window on all models and an electronic temperature control system was available on the LS series.

1996: A new four-spoke steering wheel replaced last year's "brick" steering wheel and a single key entry system was introduced. The throttle body linkage was redesigned along with the engine cover and an all-plastic intake manifold was made standard. Shifting performance was also improved.

1997: The power steering system was upgraded for more precise handling and better component durability.

First Generation 1983-1991
1983: The Marquis, like the Ford LTD, split into a mid-size version based on the Ford Fox platform platform while the Grand Marquis continued with the Panther platform. The grille was changed slightly this year.

1986: Sequential electronic fuel injection is added.

1987: The Grand Marquis is now built exclusively at the St. Thomas plant.

1988: The exterior received minor changes; the familiar cross-and-wreath hood ornament, as well as the other cross emblems, were replaced by Mercury's "Flying M" logo. The rest of the exterior emblems were updated to the new block script used on the Sable. The 2-door coupe was no longer available.

1990: The dashboard of the car was completely redesigned, including the airbag-equipped "brick" steering wheel.

1991: The electronically controlled Ford AOD-E transmission was introduced.

Origins
The Mercury Marquis was introduced as a trim package on the 1967 Mercury Monterey. The Marquis name gradually replaced Monterey. The Grand Marquis trim line was introduced in 1975 as a step up from the base Marquis and Marquis Brougham. The Grand Marquis became a model in its own right in 1983. Since then, there have been four generations of the Grand Marquis, with a major redesign in 1992 (the Mercury Colony Park wagon was not redesigned but discontinued), a refresh in 1998, and a major revamping of the front suspension and steering system in 2003.

Worldwide
Canadian market
In Canada, after the Mercury brand was phased out in 1999, the car was sold as the Ford Grand Marquis but still remains badged as a Mercury, despite being named a Ford in all Canadian sales literature. Since the demise of the Mercury Marauder in 2004, the Grand Marquis is the last remaining Mercury vehicle sold in Canada. It replaces the civilian Crown Victoria, which is now sold only to commercial fleets and law enforcement in Canada (as a Police Interceptor).

Middle Eastern market
The Grand Marquis and its twin, the Ford Crown Victoria, are popular sedans in the Middle East. This is especially true in countries like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Vehicles with Middle East specifications (also known as GCC spec) come with slightly different options and features, including the GS-L trim. A true dual exhaust system is standard, as well as aluminum wheels. LS wheels are standard on the GS trim and vehicles manufactured after 1998 come with Lincoln Town Car seats, available in both cloth and leather trim.

The Handling and Performance Package (HPP) was renamed to the "Export Handling Package" (EHP) and differs slightly from the Handling and Performance Package. The dual exhaust system is not part of the EHP (since it already comes standard), and it comes with a 2.73 rear axle ratio over the 3.27 of the HPP. The Export Handling Package usually comes standard on the LS and shares the same 16 inch aluminum wheels with the LSE. A long wheelbase version is also available, called the Grand Marquis GSL. In North America, the long-wheelbase model is only available to fleet customers as a commercial version of the Ford Crown Victoria.

Sale Numbers
* In November 2007 Grand Marquis Sold 4,702 Units UP 90.4% From November 2006.

Future Models
Despite rumors to the contrary, Ford has announced that they will continue to produce the Grand Marquis through at least 2010.

The company does plan on redesigning it along with the Crown Victoria sometime in the future, likely retiring the Panther platform altogether and moving them to the Ford D2C platform (used by the Ford Mustang). While Ford would likely replace the Crown Victoria name with something along the lines of Fairlane or maybe even Galaxie, to go out of Ford's plans to use names that start with the letter "F"), the Grand Marquis name would most likely be shortened back to "Marquis" to go along with Mercury naming their cars with names that begin with the letter "M".

Design quirks and oddities
* Using same basic Panther Platform it used in 1978.
* Using same Door and window design since 1992.
* Using same Dash Design since 1995.

Awards
* Class exclusive standard V8 Engine.
* Roomiest Interior in its class.
* Largest Trunk in its class.
* 5 Star safety rating in all 4 categories 12 years running 1995-2007.

==Origins==
