The Hummer H1 is a civilian vehicle based on the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), popularly known as the Humvee, which was created by AM General. The vehicle was produced from 1992 through 2006.

Originally released in the civilian market in 1992, the Hummer H1 owes its birth to the popularity of photos from Operation Desert Storm and the enthusiastic campaign from actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who personally owns several variants of Hummer vehicles. GM announced that 2006 would be the last model year for the Hummer H1 with production winding down in June 2006, due to a new emission laws for Diesel engine vehicles which take effect in 2007. No version of the Hummer H1 ever produced would meet these new standards. AM General currently has orders for an excess of 50,000 new HMMWV's to be produced between 2006-2009 for the United States Military. AM General also will continue to produce the H1, just not the Alpha. These vehicles will be sold through Fleet sales. The next H1 will most-likely bare a refined version of the prior 6.5L Turbo Diesel engine, but that has not been confirmed. Selling the H1's through fleet sales will allow the AM General to not be subjected to the new emission rules and regulations. AM General has sufficient fleet orders to produce 600-800 units per year right now.

The Hummer H1 has three common variants: a convertible-like soft top, a four-door hard top pickup truck and a Wagon body version. Other less known variants include a two-door pickup truck and a four-door slantback. At this time, the convertible/soft top and the station wagon versions are the only ones available in the mass market. The two door and four door pickup versions are only available in fleet livery.

Currently, five engine types and three automatic transmission types can be found in Hummer H1s. The common engine/transmission combinations are:
* 6.2 L Detroit Diesel V8/GM TH400/3L80 3-speed
* 6.5 L Detroit Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
* 5.7 L Vortec 5700 gasoline V8 TBI/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
* 6.5 L turbo Detroit Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
* 6.6 L Duramax LLY turbo Diesel/Allison 1000 5-speed (model year 2006)

The Hummer H1 shares some common driveline parts with its HMMWV brethren. Items like brakes, differentials, frame and major body panels (hood, tailgate and quarter panels) are identical between the HMMWV and the Hummer H1. All Hummer H1s and HMMWVs come off the same first stage assembly line, and then are separated midway to either become a military HMMWV or a civilian H1.

Hummer H1s are unique in the way they handle off road. They are inherently very stable, thanks to their wide stance. They also can ford 30 inches (76 cm) of water, climb a 22-inch (56 cm) step, have a stock ground clearance of 16 inches (41 cm) (thanks to its design of tucking driveline components inside a channel, which subsequently intrudes into the cabin space of the vehicle), have approach/departure angles of 72/37.5 degrees and most H1s are equipped with Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), which enables the driver to increase or decrease the tire air pressure at will.

Hummer H1s have many unusual features. They use inboard brakes. They have geared hubs, allowing the drivetrain's half shafts to be up high for greater clearance. The radiator is up high, sloping back over the engine. Rather than using simple runflat tires, aluminum or rubber inserts are an optional feature for runflat ability. A central tire inflation system is available as an option. Chemical warfare resistant paint is available only on the military version.

Hummer H1 Alpha
An extensively reengineered H1 powered by GM's Duramax Diesel and 5-speed Allison transmission.

Price
Price is projected to be around $129,399(U.S.D)for the open-top, and$140,796(U.S.D)for the wagon.

Trivia
* In 1990, before the H1 was sold to the public, and even before Operation: Desert Storm, AM General tested two matching white H1s by entering them in the "London To Peking Motor Challenge", a car rally consisting largely of vintage automobiles. The H1s performed flawlessly, traversing the rough roads and desert heat of central Asia with ease and even performing stunts like climbing sand dunes in the Gobi Desert for the amusement of local villagers. Highlights of the drive were broadcast in the United States on ESPN.
* In 2003, there were only 10,877 Hummer H1s in existence.
* In 2004, GM sold 447 Hummer H1s
* In 2005, GM sold 374 Hummer H1s
* Crawl ratio is 35.35:1.
* The Hummer H1 uses front brake calipers from the AMC Eagle, steering column from the Ford LTD, ignition key set from the Ford Escort, armrests from the Jeep Cherokee, and seats from Isringhausen.
* The Hummer H1's exterior is a combination of fiberglass (for the hood) steel, and aluminum. Its body panels are bonded together with a combination of rivets, bolts and cyanoacrylic (ie, Superglue) adhesives.
*It is featured in the Playstation 2 game Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition and Dub Edition Remix.

List Of Hummer Models

Hummer is a marque of vehicles sold by General Motors. For the military vehicles on which the trademark is based see HMMWV. In May 2006, GM announced that it is discontinuing the H1.

History
Hummers were traditionally built by AM General Corporation, formerly the heavy industries division of American Motors, in its Mishawaka, Indiana assembly plant. AM General had planned to sell a civilian version of the Hummer as far back as the late 1980s. In 1990, two matching white Hummers were driven from London, UK to Beijing, People's Republic of China over the rough roads of the central Soviet Union. The Hummers made the drive with ease, and highlights of this journey were broadcast on ESPN in the United States. The publicity would pale in comparison to the attention that the HMMWV received for its service in Operation: Desert Storm the following year.

In 1991, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Hum-Vee) vehicle to the public under the brand name Hummer. According to legend, they began doing so after Arnold Schwarzenegger asked them to; apparently, he was impressed by a convoy of Hum-Vees that drove by while filming "Kindergarten Cop" in 1990. In 1999, AM General sold the brand name to General Motors but continued to manufacture the vehicles. GM is responsible for the marketing and distribution of all Hummers produced by AM General. In the next few years, GM introduced two new homegrown models, the H2 and H3, and renamed the original vehicle to H1. AM General continues to build the H1 and is contracted by GM to produce the H2. The H3 is built in Shreveport, LA.

As of 2004, Hummer has gone international with selected importers and distributors in Europe and other markets. It has only been sold in small volumes, but some celebrities and business people have bought Hummers to satisfy their curiosity. Markets such as Australia have shown interest in Hummers with importers converting the latest H3 to right hand drive despite GM not officially selling the brand in Australia.

From 2006, GM will be building/assembling the Hummer H3 at the Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa to make Hummers internationally available. Hummers at the Port Elizabeth plant will be built for local South African consumption and exported to Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan.

The H2 is also assembled in Kaliningrad, Russia, by Avtotor, starting in June 2004. The plant produces a few hundred vehicles annually, and its output is limited to local consumption only (five dealers in Russia initially).

On May 12, 2006, GM announced it would cease production of the original H1 Hummer.

Evaluation
The first two Hummer models are large, heavy vehicles with large engines and complex drivelines. The H3 is smaller and geared more towards people who want an everyday SUV. They also feature aggressive styling and advertising, setting them apart from competing models. This has made them a target of criticism, as many people view Hummers as ill-suited for use as a passenger vehicle on public streets. As fuel prices have risen, detractors have also singled out the Hummer as an egregious waster of resources—a charge based largely on the Hummer's fuel consumption and size.

Since both the H1 and H2 can weigh over 8,500 lb (3855 kg)(GVWR), the United States fuel economy regulations do not apply to them. GM does not disclose their expected fuel economy ratings, and the company is not required to display a Monroney sticker on the vehicles, although that is to change by 2011 under regulations announced in March 2006. However, expected mpg ratings can be derived from their fuel capacity and range ratings. These metrics show that the Diesel H1 is expected to reach 16 mpg (U.S.), while the H2 should get 9.6 mpg. Car and Driver magazine observed 12 mpg with their H2 SUV.

When GM discontinued the H1 in May of 2006, the Sierra Club's Daniel Becker remarked, "It's one thing if it's carrying soldiers to and from a fight, it's another if it's hauling lattes home from Starbucks." Becker maintains the Sierra Club's Hummerdinger website.

Hummer H1 vs HMMWV
The Hummer H1 is basically a HMMWV built for civilian use, hence it has no armor or weapons. However, the drivetrain, frame, body, suspension, etc, are exactly the same. The H1 differs from the HMMWV in the fact that it has a civilian interior, including trim, comfortable seats, stereo, and Air Conditioning as standard options. Innovations introduced in the civilian Hummer to satisfy the demanding consumer have been later incorporated into improved military versions.

Models
There are three current and possibly two future models in the Hummer line:
* Hummer H1
* Hummer H2
** Hummer H2 SUT
* Hummer H3
** Hummer H3x
* Hummer H4
* Hummer Hx

Licensing
General Motors has been very active in licensing the Hummer brand. Various companies have licensed the Hummer trademarks for use on colognes, flashlights, bicycles, laptops, apparel, jewelry, CD players and other items.

Hummers in popular culture
*California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was the first private citizen to own a Hummer and continues to own several.
*Additionally, many rappers enjoy driving Hummers, namely 50 Cent.
*In the car chase scene in The Rock, Sean Connery's character drives a Hummer H1.
*Hummer H2s can be seen on CSI Miami. The investigators, most notably Horatio Caine, drive them to the crime scenes.
*The character Vincent Chase on the HBO television series Entourage owns a yellow H2.
*Nearly a decade before the Hummer was available to the general public, Car and Driver named the Humvee as the #1 vehicle to own in New York City, citing its ability to handle uneven terrain.

The Hummer H3 is a vehicle from General Motors' Hummer division, introduced in 2005. The H3 is the smallest of the three Hummer models, and though the H3 concept car was a pickup truck, the final vehicle is a conventional SUV. Its "GMT345" platform is based on the "GMT355" which underpins the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks.

The H3 is built at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana factory. Export versions will also be produced at the General Motors South Africa facility in Struandale, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

In the American market, the H3 is priced from $29,500 to just under $40,000. Sales have been strong, with the 33,140 sold in 2005 making up 58% of Hummer's total sales for the year. For the first two months of 2006, 8,071 H3s were sold, 74% of all Hummer sales.

The 2006 Hummer H3 is an all-new, mid-sized, five-passenger sport utility vehicle that carries the military-inspired design cues and amazing off-road capabilities of the Hummer H1 and H2, but puts them in a smaller, more affordable package. The H3 provides the level of equipment that luxury-vehicle buyers expect, even though this Hummer's base price is less than $30,000.

In an era of high gasoline prices, the appeal of the Hummer H3 is increased by its fuel economy ratings. While its larger siblings average only 10 or 12 miles per gallon, the H3 is rated at 20 miles per gallon on the highway with its standard five-speed manual transmission or 19 mpg when equipped with an optional four-speed automatic. Both transmissions are rated at 16 mpg in city driving.

See Wikicars' comprehensive Hummer H3 Review.

Recent Changes
Introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, the Hummer H3x is a trim update to the Hummer H3. Added chrome and body-colored parts differentiate it from the standard H3.

The 5.3L Vortec 5300 V8 is expected to be added to the model for the 2007 model year, with a diesel added later.

Specifications
The H3 uses the 3.5L (3464cc) Atlas straight-5 engine. The same engine that is used in the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon pickup trucks. This 20-valve DOHC unit produces 220-hp (164kW) at 5600rpm and 225ft·lbs (305N·m) at 2800rpm. It is available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Its 111.9-inch wheelbase is 1.1-inches shorter than the GMT360 SUVs. It includes an electronically-controlled dual-speed transfer case and electronic locking differential.

Since it is rated at less than 8500 lbs. (GVWR), Hummer is required to provide official fuel economy ratings. It is rated at 16 MPG in the city cycle with both transmissions and 19 MPG with the automatic or 20 MPG with the manual on the highway. ===Reliability===
The all-new Hummer H3 offers outstanding off-road capabilities and, because of its smaller width, can fit into places where the bigger Hummers can't go. The H3 also is an affordable Hummer. Its base price is less than $30,000. You can equip one with leather and power seats and with an automatic transmission and stability control and you're still in the mid-$30,000 range, the heart of the mid-size SUV market. You're also spending nearly $10,000 less than you'd pay for the Land Rover LR3, perhaps the only vehicle in the category that might challenge the H3 off pavement.

Safety
The 2006 Hummer H3 ranks sixth safety among the most popular luxury SUVs sold on the market today.
Hybrid Models
No plans to "hybridize" this "gas-guzzling road-mongrel"...yet.

Unique Attributes
Criticisms
* Some critics have argued that 220-hp is not enough for a mid-size SUV.

Generations
First Generation/Origins (2006-present)
The H3 draws its power from a 3.5L, inline five-cylinder engine that generates 220-horsepower, which we found a sufficient output to accelerate this vehicle smartly up to freeway speeds.

The H3 delivers serious off-road capability. But it also offers comfortable and quiet performance on the highway and is as capable at squeezing into tight parking spaces as it is picking its way over boulders on "The Rubicon Trail". It's an impressive balance. And the pricing is compelling. Many H3 buyers will want the "Luxury Package" with its leather seats and upgraded audio system, the automatic transmission and electronic stability control technology. Even with side curtain airbags and satellite radio you're looking at a vehicle that retails for less than $35,000.

Worldwide
Design quirks and oddities
The Hummer H3 applies the design cues that made the Hummer H1 and H2 so popular and so unlike anything else on the road. The difference is the more compact package.

The H3 has an extremely upright windshield and side windows that more closely resemble those in a turret than a typical family wagon, as well as the very short front and rear overhangs and increased ground clearance that are vital for negotiating the sort of extreme off-pavement environments Hummers have to be able to survive.

Awards
The Hummer H3 has not been on the road long enough to accumulate accolades and awards.
