The HR-V was introduced to cater for the demand for vehicles with the benefits of [[SUV]]s (in particular its bigger brother the [[Honda CR-V]]) such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, along with the maneuverability, performance and fuel economy of a smaller car (such as the [[Honda Civic]]).

The HR-V was updated in 2002 with a new interior (black faux suede interior and silver dash) and some exterior modifications including a deeper front grille.

The HR-V was originally released as the "Joymachine" available as 3 door 2WD only. A 5 door option as well as [[VTEC]] and VTEC [[4WD]] versions followed shortly after. The 3 door model was discontinued in 2003. Available in manual and [[CVT]] automatic. Various additional options were available including 16 inch alloys, remote central locking and fog lights.
