The Austin Maxi is regarded as an reliable and well built car. Its engines have proved long durability if regularly serviced, though head gasgate failure has been noted in higher mileage twin carb models, Twin carbs are also suseptable to manifold failure, which often results in coverting then to a single carb as twin carb manifolds are unobtainable..

The most suspect problem they are prone to is gearbox sycro failure and clutch oil seals poping out resulting in clutch slip
The Maxi E4 5 speed gearbox has an inherent design flaw in that the casing is too"short"in a transeverse engine to mount the syncro cones with any effect..early"cablechange"1969-1970(A U S T I N on bonnet)models really struggled with this as their cable operated selectors didnt have the rigidity in placing the car in gear(Giving the Maxi such a bad reputation)

Rod box 1500's and 1750's(Grill badged)models fair better but the syncro's still fail, sometimes with as little as 20k miles but that was AP Transmitions at the time! Issigonis really challenged the engineers to be able to mass produce the design at the time!Equilally the oil being shared between the engine and gearbox has to do twice the work so engine sluge does do the transmition any favours.

The clutch oil seal fails often as a result of too much oil in the engine or the clutch slave cylinder seal failing..
One unacredited solution has been to fit a later seal that was fitted to Allegro series 3 1982 models(made after the Maxi finished production)

For the structure.. undersealled cars should be checked over to ensure they have been well waxoiled or refreshed to keep the seallent"supple and poreous" as dried sealent holds the moisture in areas such as the inner A posts and bulkhead..
The sills can corrode around the front"toes" resulting in water getting into the inner sills.. for this check for water in the footwells..

However in comparison with other Issigonis designs the Maxi stands up well to rust penitration in the body, doors do rust out.. for some reason often the RHR rusts out first..and the front wings around the headlamp bezels, this can be eased by cutting a small drain hole in the chrome headlight surronds and then a drainhole in the front panel.

The biggest concern for any Maxi however has to be its subframe.. In recent years the support legs have failed without any signs of extrnal corrision and in one case the frame snapped in the middle as a way of metal fatigue..

The best method to make sure the frame is healthy is to keep the drain holes clean.. a tiny hole behind the support bush where the two welded seams meet..and spray inside this with waxoil,WD40 or old engine oil..Also ensure that the Hydrolastic or Hydrogas system is always keeping the car level as a low front causes strain on the support truion legs and can accelrate failure..

Hydrogas cars can suffer from nitrogen depletion in the spheres.. which can exasibate the subframe strain as the weaker bottles make the cars nose heavy..one common solution is to convert to Hydrolastic though its lengthy and involved..
