The Chevrolet Impala is an automobile developed and built by the Chevrolet car division of General Motors. Ed Cole, Chevrolet's chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen." At its peak sales volume in 1965, the Impala was the best selling full-size car in the United States.

Recent Changes
The Impala underwent a complete overhaul in 2006. For 2007, several trim-specific standard features were added, as well as OnStar for all models. Engines, of course, have also been updated to produce more power, and the sporty SS is now equipped with a new 303hp V8.

Styles and Major Options
The Impala comes in 4 available trims: the LS, LT, LTZ, and SS. Although they share three different engines among them, they are all equipped with the same 4-speed automatic transmission. All trims have touring suspensions, save for the SS which is fitted with a sport suspension. There are some upgrades from trim to trim, but the main differences between them are their engines. The 3.5L V6 is also a flexible fuel engine, available only to the LS and LT trims. Some of the standout features are as follows:

Impala LS
Reliability
Because the latest generation of the Impala just debuted in 2006, reliability information is not yet available for it. However, the previous generation maintained an overall satisfactory rating, finishing out the 2003 model year with a Green rating from Automotive Information Systems.

*RECALL ALERT: On October 10, 2008, the NHTSA issued a recall affecting 79 MY 2009 Chevrolet Impalas due to a faulty airbag which not only may fail to deploy but has an inflator tube which may rupture and hurl pieces at the passenger. Owners are urged to visit their local GM service center who will replace the system free of charge under GM's recall campaign.
Safety
The Impala has gotten high marks from the NHTSA in its safety tests. For all front-impact tests and for front seat side-impact tests, the Impala was awarded 5-Star ratings. For rear seat side-impact and rollover, the Impala rated 4 Stars.
Hybrid Models
There are currently no hybrid models of the Impala in production.

Unique Attributes
Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, "we expect the newest Impala to hold its value better than its underperforming predecessor, if not as well as its closest Ford and Chrysler competitors, the Five Hundred and 300."

Criticisms
*"All 2006 Impalas have a 4-speed automatic transmission. It's responsive, but not a modern 5-speed unit that would provide slightly faster acceleration..." - MSN Autos
*"On mildly rough pavement, the car felt way too floaty, and the shocks bottomed out on even moderate potholes." - Cars.com
*"Despite large outside mirrors, it's impossible to see exactly where the back or front of the Impala ends and no rear obstacle detection system is offered." - MSN Autos
*"The Impala uses front-wheel drive, however, which will limit the appeal of the SS to enthusiasts." - New Car Test Drive
*"The lack of a tap-up/down shift option on the performance-oriented Impala SS makes it a bit of a poseur." - Kelley Blue Book

Current Generation: (2006–present)
The 2006 Impala was introduced at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show. The base engine is a 3.5 L V6 producing 211 hp. The most notable news about the model, though, is the SS model's use of the Generation IV small-block V8 in a front wheel drive Chevrolet car for the first time: The new 5.3 L V8 (with Displacement on Demand) will produce 303 hp. The car is 200.4 in (509 cm) long, 58.7 in (149.1 cm) high, and 72.9 in (185.2 cm) wide. Like the Buick LaCrosse, this model uses the updated GM W platform. The 2006 Impala also bears resemblence to the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord. Available trim levels are LS, LT, LTZ and SS. Also updated are the 9C1 & 9C3 trim levels for Police Package models, which do not have the civilian SS' 303 hp V8 engine available, much to the disappointment of law enforcement. This car was panned by the critics who expected the second generation front-wheel drive Impala to have a more aggressive look. For one, to compete with the massive sales volume of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord and secondly, because it had a more recognized name, legacy, and fan-base larger than Camry and Accord combined. When introduced, it looked like a rehashed Lumina (which was dull in its heyday).

The interior was also completely revised. The 2006 Impala features a new wood trim center console with chrome accents on all major control buttons. The dashboard features a chrome Impala logo embeded in the wood grain trim which runs across the front of the vehicle and onto the doors. The new control knobs found throughout the vehicle's cockpit are similar to those found in the new Buick models as well as the Cadillac DTS, all of whom feature a similar center console. Another interior revision are the cupholders which are now concealed underneath the mid-section of the vehicle's center console.

Previous Generations
Fourth generation (2000-2005)
The Impala name was resurrected for the 2000 model year to replace the Lumina. It was built at the Oshawa Car Assembly in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Unlike the earlier Impalas, this one was front wheel drive and was only available with a V6. This car was based on the GM W platform; 16 inch rims were standard equipment. A new Impala SS with a supercharged V6 was brought out for the 2004 model year. Despite a lower price, the Impala competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and other mid-size sedans.

This generation of the Impala (as well as the next generation) became a huge sales success, outselling its competitor, the Ford Taurus. 290,259 were sold in 2004, making the Impala the third best-selling car in the United States that year.

Impalas, like the Taurus, were popular with fleets, especially for taxicab usage. Some cab companies would fit aftermarket replica hubcaps similar in design to the Ford Crown Victoria once the vehicles were fitted for taxicab use.

For the last year of this generation, 2005, the Impala's daytime running lights were switched from high-beam to low-beam.

Police Package
Also released with this version was the Police Package and Undercover Police Package, named 9C1 and 9C3, respectively. Available only to law enforcement, it has had more success then its predecessor, the Lumina 9C3.

Third generation (1994-1996)
In 1991, the GM B platform was extensively redesigned, though it retained the same shortened frame design of the 1977 Impala.

The Impala SS badge was resurrected in 1992 as a concept car designed by GM designer John Moss, which received lavish praise of media and auto enthusiasts alike in 1992. In fact, the show car had been so well received that it was put into production almost exactly as the designer of the car had intended, the only noticeable change being the "bowtie" logo on the grille was chrome in the production cars vs. red in the concept. The 1994 Impala SS went into production 14 months later at GM's plant in Arlington, Texas.

The car was a high-performance version of the Caprice, and is often regarded as one of the best all-around cars that General Motors ever produced. From a mechanical standpoint, it used the Caprice 9C1 police package as its base and as such got most of the equipment formerly available only to law enforcement and government agencies. This included a sport-tuned suspension with reinforced shocks and struts, a high-capacity upgraded cooling system, larger and more powerful four wheel disc brakes, transmission cooler, dual exhaust, a higher-output electrical system, and other minor mechanical alterations. Not all of the police equipment was carried over however, and the Impala SS did not get the external oil-to-air engine oil cooler, nor were all the body mounts secured (the standard Caprice and Impala SS were assembled at the factory with the front 3 body mounts missing one of the rubber cushions, while the 9C1 was assembled with all rubber cushions in place), although both are popular aftermarket additions to the Impala SS by their owners.

The Impala SS was uniquely fitted with a 3.08 limited-slip rear differential and suspension that was an inch lower. A retuned LT1 5.7 L small-block V8 engine was standard on the Impala SS, making 260 hp and 330 ft·lbf (447 N·m) of torque. The main difference between the LT1 in the Impala and the LT1 that was in the Corvette and Camaro was that the Impala engine was fitted with cast-iron cylinder heads instead of aluminum ones, and a camshaft that was designed more for low-end torque than high-end horsepower.

Cosmetically, the Impala SS received body-colored trim, which helped reduce the sometimes "bloated" look of the standard Caprice, a unique single-bar grill with no hood ornament, a rear deck spoiler, and for 1994, a rear quarter panel window insert that bore the Impala logo. It was fitted with 17" brushed aluminum rims which wore some surprisingly wide 255 mm Z-rated tires. Inside, the car came with a central console with cup holders (1994 and 1995 models) and a storage compartment, leather seats embroidered with the Impala SS logo, and a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Impala SS proved to be one of GMs most successful limited-edition vehicles ever. For the 1994 year, it was available only in black with a grey interior and sold a total of 6,303 units. In 1995, Dark Cherry Metallic and Dark Grey Green were added as exterior color options, and the body paneling on the rear quarter panel was altered to reflect the cosmetic effect formally achieved by a window insert. A total of 21,434 cars were sold for the 1995 year. 1996 was the last year of production, and sold 41,941 units. It saw some minor interior alterations, with the digital speedometer being replaced by an analog one, along with a tachometer. The shifter was moved from the column to the center console, and mechanically, the car now used the OBD-II computer system.

The entire B/D-body line, consisting of not only the Caprice and Impala, but the Caprice wagon, Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Fleetwood, was cancelled by General Motors, as they wanted more of their assembly lines to be able to produce SUVs, which were more profitable for GM. Another fact was that the Caprice was the only B-body with a market share since fleet sales to law enforcement outnumbered sales of other B-bodies. A majority of law enforcement agencies preferred the Caprice over the Ford Crown Victoria.

Today, 1994-1996 Impala SS's retain a great deal of popularity and devotion among owners and enthusiasts, more so than many comparable vehicle models with such a limited production run. Several car clubs across the United States and in other countries are centered around the Impala and related B-body vehicles, such as the Caprice and Buick Roadmaster. The Impala and its cousins are often modified by many of their owners, who take advantage of the powerful Corvette-derived engine and large size of the vehicle.

Second generation (1971-1985)
The 1970s showed a change in the American view of the automobile. The impact of the 1973 energy crisis on the industry was dramatic. Gasoline prices doubled between 1973 and 1979. Industry car sales plummeted 20% between 1973 and 1974, and for the first time in recent history, annual passenger car travel in the U.S. actually went down. The Impala's sales dropped to 176,376 units in 1975, the weakest sales year since its introduction in 1959.

This change in the automobile market resulted in Chevrolet redesigning the Impala once again in 1977 to meet changing demands. The new Impalas were shorter in length, taller in stature and narrower. The Impala embodied the new image of the full-size American car — smaller, lighter, more efficient. Even with its trimmer dimensions, the new Impala featured increased headroom, legroom and trunk space. Production of the downsized model increased substantially versus 1976, and the full-size Chevrolet regained the number one US sales position. Unfortunately there were no hardtops or convertible in the "New Impala" series, all cars were pillared sedans.

First Generation (1958-1970)
The Impala was introduced in 1958 as a new up-level, sporty trim package created for Bel Air coupes and convertibles. Unique to the model were its six taillights, a classic styling cue that became its trademark. It was named for a southern African antelope. The Impala became a separate model in 1959 in both two and four-door versions and became the best selling car in the Chevrolet product line. For 1960, it became the best-selling automobile in the United States and held that position for the next decade. From 1958 until 1996, Impala sales were in excess of 13 million units, more than any other full-size car in the history of the automobile. In 1965, the Impala set an all-time industry annual sales record of more than 1 million units, which has never been bettered.

In 1965, Chevrolet introduced the Impala Caprice. Beginning with the four-door hardtop sedan body, Impala Caprice's received unique upholstery, wood grained accents on the dash board and specialty pulls on the insides of the doors. A one year model, the Impala Caprice was reintroduced as the Chevrolet Caprice in 1966, taking the top position in the Chevrolet lineup. The Impala however, remained Chevrolet's top-selling model until late 1970s. During the 1969 model year, for example, Impala production topped Caprice production by 611,000 units.

The 1971 redesign introduced the largest Impala. The Impala's chassis would not be this extensively changed again until the introduction of the 2000 Impala. The Impala would remain Chevrolet's best-selling model until 1977.

Impala SS
The Impala is often credited with starting the muscle car era, although the credit for that really goes to Pontiac when it released the GTO. In the 1960s, gasoline was cheap and consumer demand for power exceeded the need for efficiency. Buyers were clamoring for as much room, performance, amenities and quality as they could get for their dollars. Afraid it would lose out to an in house competition, Chevy released its muscle car, the SS, soon after. In 1961, the Impala SS (Super Sport) was introduced to the market. The SS badge was to become Chevrolet's signature of performance on many models, though it has often been an appearance package only. The Impala's SS package in 1961 was truly a performance package, beginning with the high-performance 348 in³ (5.7 L) engines (available with 305, 340, and 350 hp (230, 255 and 260 kW)) or the new 409 in³ (6.7 L), which was available with up to 425 hp. The package also inclued upgraded tires on station wagon wheels, springs, shocks and special sintered metallic brake linings. Starting in 1962, the Impala SS could be had with any engine available in the Impala, right down to the 235 in³ 135 hp inline-6. With one exception, from this point until 1969, the SS was an appearance package only, though the heavy-duty parts and big engines could still be ordered.

The exception was the Z24 option package available in combination with the standard Z03 Super Sport package. Starting in 1967, through 1969, buyers of Z24s Impalas got cars badged as "SS427" models. The SS427 included heavy duty suspension and other performance goodies, as well as a Turbo-Jet 427 in either L36 or L72 variations. Special SS427 badging inside and out were the rule, but few were sold, since "muscle car" enthusiasts were looking toward big-block intermediates like the Chevelle SS396 and Plymouth Hemi Roadrunners, which were lighter and subsequently faster off the line. Interestingly, Z24 cars could be ordered without the Z03 SS package, which meant SS427 equipment but no bucket seats or center console.

The Impala SS could be identified by SS emblems on the rear fenders and trunk lid. The Impala SS became its own series (separate model rather than an option package) for 1964. In 1968, the Impala SS once more became an option package rather than having its own model. In 1969, the Impala SS again became a performance option, coming only with a 427 in³V8 of 390 or 425 hp. This was the final year for the Impala SS until 1994.

Origins
The Impala name was first used for the Corvette-based dreamcar for the 1956 General Motors Motorama. Many Chevrolet models originated as Corvette-based experiments; examples include the Corvair and Nomad. The Impala originated as a sports coupe, and was the least Corvette-like of the few because of its purported role. Painted emerald green metalic, with a white interior, the Impala featured hardtop styling.
The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year, replacing the aging Cavalier. The Cobalt is intended to compete with Japanese cars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

It is available as both a coupe and sedan and is based upon the GM Delta platform, along with the Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac G5, Saturn ION, and European Opel Astra. All Cobalts are manufactured at GM's Lordstown Assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
</gallery>

*Cosmetically, the Cobalt remains unchanged since its debut in 2005 other than the removal of the circular tail-lights. For 2006, the engine receives a boost in horsepower by 2 and certain options have changed. For 2009, the base engine receives variable valve timing which boosts power to 155 hp.

Styles and Major Options
The Chevrolet Cobalt comes in either a 2-door coupe or a 4-door sedan. Both of these are available in LS, LT, and SS Turbocharged trims. The front suspension is independent with MacPherson struts, while a semi-independent torsion bar is used in the rear. The wheelbase is 103.3 in (262.4 cm), longer than its competitors, and the width is 68.4 in (173.8 cm). Weight is at 2808-2989 lb (1273-1355 kg). The car is notable for its use of electrical, rather than the conventional hydraulic, power steering. It is built at the General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
Reliability
Consumer Reports' 2007 Annual Auto Issue indicates that the Cobalt's reliability is worse than average and includes the Cobalt among the three least reliable small cars along with the Volkswagen Jetta and Chevrolet Aveo.

*RECALL ALERT: On March 13, 2009, GM issued a recall alert affecting 276, 729 cars, namely all Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Pontiac G5, Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura and Saturn Outlook built for the 2009 model year, due to a loose clip on their transmission shift cable. The failure of the clip to be locked into place may prevent the transmission from moving into Park. This recall is filed under the NHTSA Campaign ID Number 09V073000.
Safety
Safety tests carried out on the Cobalt by the NHTSA yielded mixed results. While the Cobalt earned a 5-Star rating for passenger front-impact crash tests, it received 4-Star ratings for driver front-impact, rear side-impact, and rollover tests, and only a 3-Star rating for front side-impact tests. In addition, in the 2-door Cobalt, there was a safety concern when, as the NHTSA reported, "during the side impact test, the head of the driver dummy struck the windowsill, causing a high head acceleration. Head impact events resulting in high accelerations have a higher likelihood of serious head trauma."

Some of the available safety features that may be found on the Cobalt are as follows:
*Front and rear anti-roll bars
*4-wheel anti-lock brakes
*Driveline traction control
*Driver/passenger front-impact airbags
*Side impact bars
*Occupancy sensors
*1st/2nd row overhead side-impact airbags
Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, "the Cobalt holds an average five-year projected residual value, falling far from competitors such as the Honda Civic, Scion tC, and Mazda Mazda3. The Hyundai Elantra and Kia Spectra, however, also have lower-than-average projected residuals, just slightly higher than those of the Cobalt."
Criticisms
*"All models suffered fair coarse-pavement tire thrum." - Consumer Guide
*"Despite its impressive specs, the 2.2-liter engine often sounds like it's laboring to produce that power, especially under full throttle, even with only two adults on board." - Cars.com
*"If you're looking for a small car with a big back seat, the Cobalt can't compare to the Dodge Caliber or Scion xB. The Cobalt's engine is a bit coarse and its exhaust note is even louder." - Kelley Blue Book
*"Stopping power good, but pedal felt spongy..." - Consumer Guide

The Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-size crossover SUV from Chevrolet, introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It replaces the Chevrolet Tracker in the United States and Canada, while in Mexico it replaces the Blazer as the Tracker is still sold there. The Equinox slots between the HHR and TrailBlazer, and is the first crossover SUV from the marque. Although its dimensions are mid-sized, GM calls the Equinox a compact SUV. Riding on GM's Theta platform, the unibody Equinox is mechanically similar to the GMC Terrain, Saturn Vue, Pontiac Torrent, and the 2007 Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2857 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Saturn. It comes standard with a front-wheel drive layout, with optional all-wheel drive. Being a unibody architecture, the Equinox is not designed for serious off-roading like the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.

The Equinox is produced at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport is fitted with a 3.6 L V6 engine that is made in the U.S.
Recent Changes
*For the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, Chevrolet unveiled the second generation 2010 Chevrolet Equinox CUV. The new car, as expected, is slightly larger than the outgoing model and will feature direct injecting for the first time to help make them more fuel efficient. There are two engine options: a 2.4 litre Ecotec DI four pot mated to a 6-speed Auto producing 182 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque and returning 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. This base engine is a marked improvement over the old 3.4 litre base variant which produced nearly the same power and returned 17/24 mpg. That said, the downside is the significant reduction of torque rating so towing capacity drops from 3,500 lbs to just 1,500 lbs. The second engine in the lineup is range-topping 3.0 litre DI V6 which can tow 3500 lbs. The six banger churns out 255 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque which is a bit lower (but not by much) than the 264/250 from the old 3.6 litre V6 but shaving off 0.6 litre of wasteful displacement. Inside, the new car also show noticeable improvement over the its predecessor with better fit and finish, use of higher quality materials and attractive and modern styling. The new Equinox is expected to go on sale sometime in Spring 2009. Pricing is yet to be announced.
Safety
In safety tests carried out by the NHTSA, the Equinox earned high marks all around. For both front wheel drive and all wheel drive tests for rollover, it received 4-Star ratings. More impressively, the Equinox received 5-Star ratings for all other tests performed, including all front- and side-impact crash tests. Some of the standard safety equipment found on the Equinox includes:
*ABS and driveline traction control
*Electronic stability control
*Four wheel anti-lock brakes
Hybrid Models
There are currently no hybrid models of the Equinox in production.

Equinox Fuel Cell
The Chevrolet Equinox Fuel cell vehicle uses hydrogen for fuel and its only emission is water. The Equinox Fuel Cell will use the same fourth-generation hydrogen technology found in the Chevrolet Sequel concept, which was unveiled earlier in September. The Equinox Fuel Cell is designed for only 50,000 miles (80,000 km) of driving, but is engineered to be operable in subfreezing temperatures throughout its life. GM states that the Equinox Fuel Cell is about 500 pounds heavier than the original Equinox and has one inch less ground clearance. To reduce weight, the Equinox Fuel Cell has aluminum doors and a carbon fiber hood. As a fun fact, the Equinox fuel cell has Pontiac Torrent headlights.

The Equinox Fuel Cell will come with a range of safety features, including ABS, traction control, and GM's OnStar telematics service, which will offer drivers advice on operating the cars as well as information on nearby hydrogen filling stations. The car is expected to meet all 2007 federal safety standards. The Equinox Fuel Cell will have a screen on the dashboard which lets the driver know how much gas they have saved relative to the same mileage of a gasoline-powered Equinox. The instrument panel will also feature a kilowatt meter and a fuel cell energy display. The fuel cell has four vapor outlets which replace the exhaust pipe. Three carbon-fiber fuel tanks storing up to a maximum of 9.25 pounds (4.2 kg) of gaseous hydrogen at 10,000 psi (70 MPa) will give the Equinox a range of 200 miles (320 km). The Equinox Fuel Cell is certified by the EPA as a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV). GM will build more than 100 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles and will begin deploying these test fleet vehicles in the fall of 2007 as part of a comprehensive plan dubbed “Project Driveway."
Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, "as for resale, Kelley Blue Book projects the Equinox to retain an average resale value, on par with the Ford Escape and Mitsubishi Outlander, but well below the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester."
*"If you're enthusiastic about the driving experience, the lack of a manual shifter and the numb electric power steering may not appeal to you. And the Equinox's well laid-out interior begs for more in the way of color and contrast." - Kelley Blue Book
Current Generation: (2010–present)
The Equinox is expected to be redesigned for the 2010 model year, arriving in dealerships in May 2009. It will get a new 2.4-liter, direct-injection 4-cylinder engine, with better fuel economy promised by GM . The rebadged Pontiac Torrent, on the other hand, will be dropped for 2010, replaced by the GMC Terrain (currently not sold in the US) which will share the same platform, but will receive unique sheet metal (a redesign from the current model) and features not found on the Equinox http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/1231613.
First Generation/Origins: (2005–2009)
The Equinox is larger than the VUE, riding on a 112.5 in (2857 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (149.9 mm) longer than the Saturn. It has much in common with the Pontiac Torrent and 2007 Suzuki XL-7, however.

For 2007, the Equinox received several updates, both inside and out. The interior dashboard has been redesigned with a new instrument panel and driver information panel, among other things. The exterior offers new wheel and color options, as well as revised front and rear fascias. Lastly, safety features such as traction control and electronic stability control have been made standard.
