See the Dodge Magnum (B-body) entry for more information about the first Magnum model.

The Dodge Magnum name has been used on a number of different Dodge automobiles. The most recent is a large rear wheel drive station wagon introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. This new Magnum is Dodge's first car to use the new Chrysler LX platform, shared with the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger. Previously, the Dodge Magnum model name had been used from 1978 to 1979 for a large coupe in the United States (see the Dodge Magnum (B-body) entry for more information on that model). In Brazil, the Magnum name was a version of their Plymouth Valiant from 1979 to 1981. In Mexico, the Magnum was a K-car from 1983 to 1990.

In November 2007, Chrysler LLC announced that the 2008 model year will be the Magnum's final year of production. At this writing there is no replacement slated for the Magnum.
Reliability
Consumer Reports states that the 2006 Magnum's "first-year reliability is average."

Safety
The Magnum received high marks in safety tests carried out by the NHTSA. For rollover and front side-impact crash tests, it earned 4-Star ratings, and for rear side-impact and all front-impact crash tests, it earned 5-Star ratings. With the exception of the Base model, all of the following safety equipment can be found standard on all trims of the Magnum:
*ABS and driveline traction control
*Electronic stability control
Hybrid Models
There are no hybrid versions of the Magnum currently in production.

Unique Attributes
This car has a "cool" factor that young and old seem to have no problem relating to. Baby boomers love the retro styling, while Gen-xers dig the cool low-rider look of the gun-slit windows. The best part of this cool factor, is the vehicle's utility. One need not feel guilty in buying such a narly looking beast, since mom is kept happy by the cavernous luggage capacity, and the rear-seat legroom useful for placating those growing teenagers on long trips. This car allows the minivan crowd to be cool once again.

Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, "The Magnum is projected to retain a better-than-average residual value, with the base V6 model holding 55 percent of its value after 24 months and the all-wheel drive R/T holding 59 percent. That's on par with the Volvo V70 series, but not as good as the Passat 4MOTION V6."
The real worth of this vehicle on the resale market will not be known until twenty years from now, when the hot-rodders start to get there hands on them and drive their values through the roof. The Magnum will be a collector--especially considering the limited, but not too limited, four-year production run. Mechanicals will not be hard to come by either, since HEMI drivetrains are available on a plethora of other RWD Chrysler products which continue to be produced in large numbers.

Criticisms
*"If significant ground clearance is a part of your all-wheel-drive demands, the Magnum is no match for a true SUV. Narrow windows and a big rear blind spot are also bothersome characteristics." - Kelley Blue Book

Current Generation: (2005–Present)
The Magnum name was revived in 2004 as a 2005 station wagon on Chrysler's LX platform. This is Dodge's first station wagon since the discontinuation of the Dodge Colt wagon in 1991. It is also the first full-size American station wagon produced since the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Caprice/Buick Roadmaster Estate wagons in 1996, unlike its rival, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx.

The Dodge Magnum is a station wagon version of the Chrysler 300, with minor cosmetic changes.

The Magnum has four engine options, the SE features the 190 hp 2.7 L LH V6, the SXT has the 250 hp 3.5 L V6, and the RT has the new 5.7 L Hemi V8. The SRT-8 has a 425 hp 6.1 L Hemi engine.

The Magnum is available with all wheel drive on SXT and RT models. The AWD SXT and the RT use a Mercedes-Benz-derived 5-speed automatic transmission, while all other models use a four-speed automatic. With this addition, resemblance to the discontinued AMC Eagle must be noted.

Like the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, the Magnum was a stunning success for the company, easily outselling its predecessor, the Dodge Intrepid. Dodge has announced plans for the Magnum to go on sale as a police variant to compete against the Ford Crown Victoria. Available only to law enforcement, emergency agencies, and government agencies, the vehicle will have the SXT's V6 as a base motor and the Hemi as an option, along with police-specific options such as a steering-column mounted shifter, deactivated interior rear windows and locks, and bulletproof glass between the first and second rows of seats and the cargo area. The Magnum is built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

The Magnum was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2005.
For 2006, an SRT-8 version was produced. Like the 300C SRT-8, it features the new 6.1 L Hemi engine, which produces 425 hp (317 kW). 20" wheels, firmer suspension, bigger brakes, new lower-body treatment, and a revised front and rear-fascia completes the transformation. The SRT-8 debuted at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show. The SRT-8 was named "Best New Modern Muscle Car" in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year contest.
Worldwide
Brazil
In Brazil, the Plymouth Valiant/Dodge Dart continued in production until 1981. For the last three years, a 2-door version was sold as the Magnum, while the 4-door was the Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge Dart, and Dodge Charger RT.

Mexico
The same Brazilian Valiant derivative was sold in Mexico. 1983 saw the introduction of the K car Magnum; this version stayed in production until 1990.
* In the 2005 film The Island, the mercenary team led by Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) drives Dodge Magnums.
* The 2005 song Don't Cha by Pussycat Dolls features Busta Rhymes rapping about the Dodge Magnum on the third verse of the song.

This is a shame, considering the added value it would have provided in city gas mileage, as well as the low-end torque this would have afforded the car in the rather hefty-for-3.5l-V6 versions.

SRT-8
For 2006, an SRT-8 version was produced. Like the 300C SRT-8, it features the new 6.1 L Hemi engine, which produces 425 hp (317 kW). 20" wheels, firmer suspension, bigger brakes, new lower-body treatment, and a revised front and rear-fascia completes the transformation. The SRT-8 debuted at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show. The SRT-8 was named "Best New Modern Muscle Car" in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year contest.

See the separate Dodge Magnum SRT8 page for more information.
Worldwide

Design quirks and oddities
* In the 2005 film The Island, the mercenary team led by Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) drives Dodge Magnums.
* The 2005 song Don't Cha by Pussycat Dolls features Busta Rhymes rapping about the Dodge Magnum on the third verse of the song.
The Porsche 996 is the 4th generation of the Porsche 911 range. It was manufactured by Porsche between 1996 - 2005. It is significant in the the history of the 911 as it is the first 911 to break from several of the historic model's traditions, such as featuring organic ovoid headlights in place of the 911's traditional ovals and, more significantly, switching to a water-based cooling system in place of the 911's traditional air-cooled setup. It has also been criticized for being 'bloated' as it increases significantly in size compared to previous generations.

Task: To Perfect Perfection
The 996 model was given an un-enviable task - to replace the legendary, and very popular, 993 model, and also to carry the Porsche company into record profits and the new Millenium. The new model was redesigned from the ground-up from its predecessors, and featured a new chassis, transmission, engine and bodywork. The engine had decreased in capacity, to 3.4 litres, and was water-cooled, for the first time in a Porsche flat-six. Porsche cited ever-stringent emission and noise regulations for the swap in cooling - but Porsche enthusiasts moaned that the distinctive sound would be lost. But they hadn't heard it yet.

The engine was not the only point for criticism for the new 996, however. The general press and public pointed out that the front end was identical to its smaller sibling - the Boxster, a car almost half the price of the 911. But Porsche was eager to get people to see behind these 'faults', and embrace the radically different but comfortably similar new incarnation of the world's most famous sportscar.

Ground-up Re-engineering
The 993 could never be described as aging, but its Achilles' heel was the power plant, which was rooted in the past, and although Porsche had bought the engine some time from the strict worldwide emissions regulations and drive-by noise limitations with the excellent VarioCam system, the writing was on the wall, and the decision was taken to produce a whole new 911 which could conceivably carry the company well into the 2000s - and for this to happen, a new engine had to be built.

The flat-six Boxer configuration was retained, and air-cooling was scrapped, to make way for the water-cooling system, which was both more efficient and crucially, quieter. Capacity shrunk 200 cubic centimetres to 3.4 litres, but power was up overall to 300 BHP. But the engine was only part of the story.

The exterior design was penned by Pinky Lai, and was refreshingly contemporary over the 993. The front lights and driving lights of the 993 were incorporated into one pod, christened the 'Fried Egg' by its detractors. The evocative roofline remained, and the rear lost the reflector stripe under the bonnet - which was now lined by two larger units, incorporating all the necessary accoutrements. The doorhandles were now flush to the bodywork, and the doors were rimless, and to complement the changes, a whole new range of alloy wheels were designed, proving to be evolutions of their 993 predecessors.

The radical developments continued indoors. The traditional 'five dial' dash was ditched, and replaced with a more modern, smoother dashboard. The seat design was revised, and the cabin as a whole was larger and better equipped - a whole host of new electrical toys were made available for the 996 that space did not allow in the 993. A new colour chart and interior material list was drawn up, and the 996 featured leather seats as standard.

Under the skin, the power was delivered to the road by the now-traditional Carrera two wheel-drive and Carrera 4 four wheel-drive platforms, intercepted by a six-speed manual or revised five-speed Tiptronic semi-automatic gearbox.

The standard Carrera models were joined in 2000 by a Carrera-based 'Millenium' model, finished in Vesuvius Metallic with chromed 'Turbo Technic' alloys. Only 911 were built worldwide. In 2002, the whole range was updated, featuring new bumpers, alloy wheels, front lights, colour charts and equipment levels. The power went up slightly, as the bored-out 3.6 litre engine made its debut. To celebrate 40 Years of 911, in 2004 a special Celebration model was produced - again with a production run of only 1963 units worldwide - and featured the Aerokit as standard, the GT Silver paint from the Carrera GT, and boosted interior specifications. This model was the only 911 since the 1980s to actually be badged so - a special rear badge was designed, which was essentially '911' in an italicised script.

In conjunction with the 2002 revamp, the Targa model was unveiled - and was essentially a Carrera or Carrera 4 with the sliding glass roof as premiered on the 993 model almost a decade earlier. The new car was designed with a rear hatch window, making it the most practical sports car on the market. Again, the Targa was engineered by using a Cabriolet bodyshell as a base, then adding strong visual bars to top off the doors. From a side profile, the Targa has a sharper angle to the rear window over the standard Coupe.

Moving Upwards - the Super-996s
The Turbo
The obligatory Turbo model raced onto the price lists in 1999, boasting headline-grabbing performance figures such as 420BHP - from a twin-KKK-turbocharged 3.6 litre - and a sub six second 0-60mph time. The Turbo lines transferred well to the 996 shape - but the general opinion was that the car had lost a little visual drama over the outgoing 993. The 'Tea Tray' spoiler, once the trademark of the Turbo model, was dead, replaced by an almost-ducktail speed-operated, electrically-lifting example. The once-expansively wide rear arches were not as pronounced, but the impressive alloy wheels were retained, albeit in a modernised form.

But Porsche let the chassis and powerplant forge an impression of the car, and period press struggled for enough superlatives to describe the other-worldly performance, exploitable chassis and almost-impossible-with-such-performance everyday usability. Porsche had certainly produced a stunning automobile with the 996 Turbo, and strong sales reflected this. Technology was a trademark of the model, with such aerodynamic wonders like the rear-bumper air vents - which created a vaccuum behing the car, sucking hot air from the engine. The carbon-composite brakes made their debut on the model - badged PCCB, and developed from Porsche's recent Le Mans activities, these amazing brakes promised fade-free performance. However, they carried a price tag to match - around £8,000!

The Turbo also filled the 'Luxury' part of its class tag. The interior was the first word in leather-lined opulence, with electric everything, and generous standard equipment levels.

Also available on the Turbo was the X50 option - the power kit. This harnessed better breathing and engine mapping to release and extra 30BHP, producing a peak 450BHP. Torque figures almost mirrored this. With the X50 option, the 996 Turbo was peerless in every respect.

From 2005, the Turbo S model was available, essentially as a run-out model. The car carried a price premium over the standard model, but featured the X50 option, Graphite-painted alloys, a special 'Olive Green' paint option and the Porsche Carbon Composite Brakes (PCCB) as standard. Equipment levels were high, and an LSD was also added to the standard specification sheet.

The GT3
The GT3, released in 1998, was essentially the Carrera RS-equivalent for the 996 generation. However, the GT3 was a much more advanced engineering proposition compared to the standard RS ethos of weight reduction and sports suspension. The GT3 used a completely different engine to the standard Carrera, whose basic bodyshell it used. The engine was derived from the Le Mans winning 996 GT1, and featured lavish use of light and expensive materials - such as magnesium and titanium. The whole engine and the car was partly hand-built by Porsche's Motorsport Division, in Weissach.

Over the standard car, the GT3 had fully adjustable suspension which was set 40mm lower than the Carrera's. Anti-roll bars were fitted front and rear, and the interior was stripped in keeping with the idea that many customers would use the car for the new phenomenon - track days. The rear seats were jettisoned, along with the air conditioning and stereo, and bucket seats and a roll cage were added. However, due to an additional radiator, stronger gearbox and the more sophisticated engine, the GT3 weighed 40KG more than the Carrera. The Comfort model reinstated the air conditioning (if so specified), removed the roll cage (although the car was welded for it if the owner wanted to fit it eventually), included less severe perches and thicker carpeting. It was still a very extreme automobile. Exterior-wise, the GT3 was supplied with the 'Aerokit GT3', which included a rather handsome adjustable folded rear wing, in conjunction with deeper side skirts and a lip spoiler under the bumper. 'Sport Design' alloy wheels were fitted as standard, and were of two piece manufacture to keep unsprung mass to a minimum.

Although a success, the GT3 was updated along with the rest of the range in 2003, and now sported the new headlights and bumpers. A new rear spoiler was also specified, to provide greater downforce for extreme track work, and the handsome Sport Design alloys were replaced with a forged one-piece design. The ethos remained the same, and power was up to 381BHP. PCCB was available for track day fanatics looking for that extra edge, although horror stories circulated about cracking and disintegration of the brake discs themselves - Porsche denied this to be possible and also the warranty claims, meaning the unlucky owners had to fork out for new brakes - a very expensive proposition.

In 2003, the GT3 became even more extreme, with the GT3-RS. This model became the only RS-badged 996. Power remained the same over the GT3 Mk. 2, but 20KG of weight was lost, with further stripping from the interior, the addition of PCCB as standard, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a carbon fibre bonnet and a plastic rear window. All GT3-RSs were supplied in White, and the owner could choose the colour of the alloy wheel centres and the script along the sills of the car - in either blue or red, designed to echo the 1972 2.7 Carrera RS. The GT3-RS has become a cult 911.

The GT2
The 993 GT2 was one of the wildest 911s available, and it came as a shock to the world when Porsche announced that it would create another, using the 996 as a base.

Released in 2001, the GT2 again used the Turbo model as a base, and removed the front differential, to create two-wheel drive. The power of the turbocharged powerplant was raised to 482 BHP, and unnecessary ancillaries such as traction control were removed. The interior went on a diet, and the suspension was lowered slightly. PCCB was added as standard, along with a more extreme bodykit - deeper front bumpers, thicker sideskirts and a larger rear wing over the Turbo.

The model was created to top off the 996 range, and to show all detractors that the 996 was, in fact, a performance car. This impression was cemented when the GT2 broke the production car lap record and the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in Germany.

The Fortwo is the original Smart model that was launched in 1998 throughout Europe as the City Coupe. The name Fortwo was introduced when Smart began to produce new models.

On June 28, 2006, DaimlerChrysler confirmed that retailer UnitedAuto Group "will be responsible for awarding potential dealerships and developing and maintaining a Smart vehicle dealership network throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico."

It will make its US debut in early 2008. Deposits for delivery are being accepted at SmartUSA.

Recent Changes
*A major redesign is in the works for the 2007 model year. While not yet released publically, it is known that the car's length is being increased by some margin to meet US safety standards. However, it has been proven that the new European version is actually about as safe as a Mercedes-Benz.

*For 2008, both Coupe and Cabrio versions of the fortwo will be offered in two new Brabus trims, the basic Brabus and the Brabus Xclusive. Both are equipped with a turbocharged 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine developing 72 kW/98 bhp / 97 Hp at 5500 rpm, allowing the fortwo Brabi to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.9 sec and reach a governed top speed of 155 km/h. The Xclusive further boasts additional standard equipment like a front spoiler with enlarged air inlets, a special rear apron and heated, leather sport seats. Prices are estimated to be around UD$22,500 to US$30,600.

</gallery>

Styles and Major Options
Instead of trims or styles, fortwo has three 'design lines': Pure, Pulse, and Passion.

The Pure is the basic model, providing a basic configuration and minimal extras. It is the least expensive of the three.

The Pulse is a sportier model, including leather steering wheels, the unique 'alien eyes' tachometer and clock, alloy wheels, and sportier interior.

The Passion is considered the luxury line, with air conditioning, electric mirrors, and other speciality options.

A cabriolet verison is available.

Pricing
Since the vehicle is not yet available for purchase from dealers in the United States, final pricing remains to be seen.
*Roughly:
*Pure (base): $12,000
*Passion: $14,000
*Convertible: $17,000

Gas Mileage
Until the vehicle is formally available in the US, official mileage data is not yet available. However, by European measures, the Smart is considered particularly fuel efficient, averaging 50 mpg for the gasoline model and 69 mpg for the Diesel.

Reliability
The fortwo's Mercedes Benz heritage comes through here, earning the car high marks for reliablility in Europe, Japan, and Canada.

Safety
Probably the biggest concern about the smart car people express is the issue of safety. In the US, 'bigger is better' is the normal rule-of-thumb when it comes to deciding which vehicle is safest. With the fortwo, that rule fast becomes becomes roadkill.

The secret to this vehicles safety rating comes from its 'Tridion Safety Cell.' This cell is designed to retain its shape in a collision, transfering much of the impact force back to the other vehicle. Also, given its size, the likelihood of striking one of the tires in a collision is high, which means the suspension helps absorb the force of the impact.

To help avoid the crash, the all fortwos come with Electronic Stability Control and Anti-lock brakes as standard features. Dual airbags, self-tensioning seatbelts, knee impact cushions and a collapsible steering column also come standard. Side-impact airbags are available as an option.

US Safety ratings have not yet been set, but in European ratings, the fortwo gets a very respectible 3-stars.
</gallery>

Colors
Colors are one aspect of the Smart that is unique. While the vehicle has one primary color, the Tidion shell comes through at points, and has its own base color. In most instances, the shell is black, but in the Passion trim, the shell is also available in silver.

The rest of the vehicle is made up of interchangeable dent-resistant molded plastic panels. Much like the Saturn lineup, these panels are solid colored, which means if they are scratched, the color remains unchanged. The best part is that you can purchase additional panels from the dealer, allowing you to change the color or your car at will.

In addition to the standard colors, smart is known for releasing limited edition colored vehicles, frequently themed to a partner. Some examples are Barbie Pink and iPod white. These limited edition vehicles often have a custom set of interior options, not available any other way.

Main Competitors
In the US, it is tough to define competitors, as there really is nothing specifically that matches up with the smart fortwo. The following are the closest vehicles in size and fuel efficiency.

* Toyota Yaris
The Mazda MX-5 is a popular sports car built by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan. It is known as the MX-5 Miata (or popularly just Miata) in North America, where it was one of the few Mazdas to be given a name. It is known just as the MX-5 in Oceania and Europe and the Eunos Roadster or simply Roadster in Japan. It was initially unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on 10 February, 1989. The Miata is the world's best-selling sports car, with 720,407 cars produced and sold between February 1989 and March 31 2005. Beginning with the third-generation 2006 model, Mazda consolidated worldwide marketing using the MX-5 name, though enthusiasts in the U.S.A. steadfastly refer to it as a Miata, a name that means "reward" in Old High German.

Reliability
Although the latest generation of the MX-5 Miata is still too young to provide accurate long-term reliability information, Consumer Reports states that "first-year reliability has been average."

Safety
Although the NHTSA has yet to post safety information on the MX-5, Autos.com reports that the MX-5 places 5th in safety for its Sporty Car category. Some of the standard safety equipment found on the MX-5 includes:
*Front and rear anti-roll bars
*4-wheel anti-lock brakes
*Driver/passenger front-impact airbags
*Driver/passenger side-impact airbags
*Occupancy sensors
Hybrid Models
There are currently no hybrid models of the MX-5 in production.

Unique Attributes
Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, "as for the MX-5's long-term value, Kelley Blue Book expects the MX-5 to retain strong residual and resale values in the first three years, but then drop to average in years four and five."

Criticisms
*"Practicality doesn't apply here." - New Car Test Drive
*"Its tonneau cover is a bit fiddly to install, and at best, rudimentary." - Road & Track
*"If you're long of leg or over six feet in height, the MX-5 can still present you with a cramped driving position. The MX-5 has a small trunk and does not offer much in the way of interior storage space. If this is going to be your only mode of transport, you're not going to win many friends when it's your turn to drive the co-workers to lunch." - Kelley Blue Book
Current Generation: (NC: 2006–Present)
Production of the next-generation Mazda MX-5 (NC) began in May 2005 and went on sale in August, for the 2006 model year. It uses Mazda's 16-valve, 2.0 L MZR I4 engine, producing 170 hp (128 kW) and 140 ft·lbf (190 N·m). Despite the engine upgrade, impressive engineering allows the car to maintain a perfect 50-50 weight distribution. 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions are offered as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

Despite speculation, the 3rd generation shares no structural components with the RX-8. The chassis was developed specifically for the new MX-5. Suspension has been changed from a 4-wheel double-wishbone setup to a front wishbone rear multilink setup and technologies like traction control and stability control have been added to increase drivability.

The styling harkens back to the original design while adopting a clean, more muscular profile reminiscent of the Audi TT. Some design elements have been adopted to reinforce the family relationship with the RX-8. Unlike the NA to NB update, which was mostly a nose/tail/interior change, there are substantial differences in every body panel, so current accessories will not work with the new design.

A Car and Driver test revealed a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time of 6.5 seconds for the NC.

The 2006 special edition "3rd Generation Limited" featured added chrome accents and special wheels. 3500 were built worldwide (300 in the UK, 750 in the USA).

MX-5 Hardtop
Mazda launched a coupé convertible version of the MX-5 with a three-piece folding metal hardtop in late 2006. Mazda will use the British International Motor Show for its global reveal of the new Mazda MX-5 coupe.

The Miata has a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension. It comes with a 1.6 L, 1.8 L or 2.0 L longitudinally mounted engine coupled to a manual transmission. An automatic transmission is available as an option, though rarely selected by buyers.

The body is a conventional, but very light, unibody shell. Miatas also incorporate a unique trusswork called the Powerplant Frame (PPF) which connects the engine to the differential, minimizing flex and creating a tight, responsive feel. Many Miatas feature limited slip differentials and antilock brakes. Traction control is an option available on the third generation MX-5.

With a 50:50 front/rear weight balance (when measured with an average weight driver and a 2/3 full gas tank), the car has very neutral handling, which makes it easy to drive for the beginner, and fun for the advanced driver. Inducing oversteer is easy and very controllable. The Miata is popular in amateur and stock racing events, particularly the Sports Car Club of America's Solo2 autocross and Spec Miata race series.

Previous Generations
Second generation (NB: 1999–2005)
In 1998, Mazda released the updated model year 1999 MX-5 Miata. This model is known as the NB (referring to the model number printed on the VIN plate) or Mark 2. With its introduction, the earlier MX-5 Miata became known as the NA or Mark 1. The NB features a more powerful engine and more modern styling cues borrowed from the aggressive RX-7. A 6-speed manual transmission became available for the top models, though the 5-speed was retained as well. In Japan, the Eunos name was dropped, as the marque was considered a commercial failure, but the successful Roadster was incorporated into the Mazda brand. Prices in the United States, the main market for the Miata, started at US$19,770.

Body and chassis
Although many parts of the interior and body were different, the most notable changes were the headlights: the first model's retractable headlights had been exchanged for fixed ones. The new car had grown slightly in width compared to the earlier model with dimensions: length 3955 mm (155.7 in); width 1680 mm (66.1 in); height 1235 mm (48.6 in) and wheelbase 2265 mm (89.2 in). Ground clearance was a slightly reduced 135 mm (5.3 in). With the minimum of options, the NB weighed 1000 kilograms. The new model was slightly more aerodynamic than the original, with a Cd figure of 0.36.

Suspension and wheels
The second generation Miata continued to employ four-wheel independent suspension, with enlarged anti-roll bars of 22 mm (0.87 in) at the front and 11 mm (0.43 in) at the rear. The wheel, tire and brakes package on the second generation Miata was significantly upgraded. Front brakes were of 255 mm (10 in) diameter with 251 mm (9.9 in) at the rear. ABS was offered as an option. Alloy wheels were now of 14 inch or 15 inch diameter and 6 inch width, depending on the model. Sports models were equipped with the larger wheels and 195/50VR15 tires.

Engine
The BP-4W engine remained at 1.8 L but received several minor updates. The engine compression ratio was raised from 9.0:1 to 9.5:1 by adding slightly domed pistons. The intake cam was changed to a solid lifter design with a stronger cam. The intake runners in the head were straightened and the intake manifold was mounted higher up. The new intake manifold received a set of flappers that could uncover a resonance chamber - this was needed to fix a dead spot in the torque curve that the new head created. Power output of the new engine is quoted at 105 kW (140 hp) with 119lbft of torque.

The 1.6 L B6 engine remained available in some markets, including Japan.

Performance
The second generation Miata with the 1.8 L engine could reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 7.9 seconds and had a top speed of 123 mph (197 km/h).

Generation 2.5 (NB)
In 2001, a facelift to the NB was released. There were some minor design changes, with the 18 July 2000 press release announcing the new model describing the changes as "resulting in an even sportier and more forceful look". Some cockpit elements were also changed, with instrument panel gauges having a white face and red numbers. The seats were also upgraded, incorporating more support in the side bolsters, and taller headrests. Added this year for top models were 16 inch (406 mm) wheels with 205/45VR16 low-profile tires and larger brakes (10.6 inch diameter at the front and 10.9 inch at the rear). The upgraded tires and suspension allowed the new model to pull 0.88 g in lateral grip in tests by Car and Driver. The body was strengthened, gaining 16% in bending rigidity and 22% in torsional rigidity. With the minimum of options the 2001 model weighed 1065 kilograms.

The 1.8 L BP-Z3 engine was slightly modified and now featured variable valve timing on the intake camshaft. The intake and exhaust system also received a minor upgrade. These modifications resulted in power output of 117 kW (155 bhp) for models delivered in Japan and Australia. The same engine produced 110 kW (146 hp) in vehicles sold in the United States and Europe (likely due to more restrictive emission standards). In the United States, Mazda erroneously quoted the power figure for the Japanese and Australian model in early catalogues. Car and Driver magazine and numerous owners confirmed the missing power, and Mazda was forced to buy back a number of 2001 cars due to these misleading power claims. Owners who did not take up the buy back offer were offered an apology and free servicing for the warranty period.

32,000 2001 and 2002 model year Miatas were recalled in December of 2005 for excessive emissions.

Mazdaspeed MX-5
2004 saw the introduction of the turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5. It featured a light-pressure turbo BPT engine for 178 hp rather than the S-VT BP-Z3. Other features included a special suspension, upgraded transmission and clutch assemblies, upgraded drivetrain components, Racing Hart 17 inch wheels, special interior trim, and special exterior paint.

Though not officially a "Limited Edition" production run, only a small number of Mazdaspeed Miatas were produced during model years 2004 and 2005. In 2004, 4000 cars where built and in 2005, 1428.

First Generation/Origins (NA: 1990-1997)
The Miata was envisioned by its designers as a small roadster with a minimum of unnecessary weight and complexity. The first Miata prototype was built in California, USA and Worthing, England. Many key stylistic cues were clearly inspired by (some say copied from) the Lotus Elan, a 1960s roadster that is widely considered to be one of the best handling sports cars of its day.

A competition to design a light-weight sports car
The design of the first generation Miata was the result of a competition between Mazda (North America) and the Tokyo Design Studio. The role of designing a front-engine, rear-wheel drive light-weight sports car was assigned to Mazda (North America) whilst the Tokyo Design Studio designed front engined, front-wheel drive and mid-engined, rear-wheel drive cars for the competition.

The first round of judging the competing designs for the MX-5 was held in April 1984. Designs were presented on paper. On paper the mid-engined car appeared the most impressive, although it was known at the time that such a layout would struggle to meet the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) requirements of the project. It was at the second round of the competition in August 1984, when full scale clay models were presented, that the front-engined rear-wheel drive design, code-named "Duo 101," was selected as the basis for Mazda's new light-weight sports car.

The Duo 101 design, so named as either a soft-top or hard-top could be used, was referred to International Automotive Design in Worthing, England for the construction of a running prototype. The prototype was built with a fiberglass body, a 1.4 L engine from a Mazda Familia and other components from a variety of early Mazda models. The prototype was completed in August 1985 and code-named the V705 by Mazda.

After some minor changes in the design, presented in clay model form by the designers from Mazda (North America), the project was given final approval on 18 January 1986. The project was now code-named P729 by Mazda. The task of constructing five engineering mules was again allocated to International Automotive Design, who also conducted the first front and rear crash tests on the prototype. The project then returned to Japan for final engineering details and production issues to be decided.

The Miata meets the public
The Miata was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on 10 February 1989, with a price tag of US$13,800. The Miata would be available for purchase by the public from July 1989 as a 1990 model. In Japan, the car was not badged as a Mazda, as the company was experimenting with the creation of different brands for deluxe models, similar to Nissan's Infiniti and Toyota's Lexus. Instead, the Mazda MX-5 was called the Eunos Roadster in its own market.

Body and chassis
The body shell of the Miata is all-steel with an aluminium bonnet. The overall dimensions are: length 3970 mm (156.3 in); width 1675 mm (65.9 in); height 1235 mm (48.6 in); wheelbase 2265 mm (89.2 in). Ground clearance is 140 mm (5.5 in). Without options, the NA model MX-5 weighed 940 kilograms. The body was reasonably aerodynamic, with a Cd figure of 0.38.

Suspension and wheels
The Miata employs independent double wishbone suspension on all four wheels with an 18 mm (0.71 in) anti-roll bar at the front. Four wheel disc brakes of 235 mm (9.3 in) diameter (ventilated) at the front and 231 mm (9.1 in) at the rear stopped 5.5 inch wide 14 inch alloy wheels with 185/60HR14 radial tires.

Engine
The original Miata came with a 1.6 L double overhead cam inline four-cylinder engine, producing 90 kW (120 bhp) and 100 lbf·ft (136 N·m) of torque. The engine employs an L-Jetronic fuel injection system and a camshaft angle sensor instead of a distributor. This engine was previously used by Mazda in the 323 series, including the 323 GTX, a turbocharged, all-wheel drive vehicle, and retains the plumbing ports required for aftermarket turbocharging.

Performance
The first generation Miata could reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 8.2 seconds and had a top speed of 119 mph (190 km/h).

Generation 1.5 (NA)
The MX-5 Miata was freshened for 1994 with the introduction of a more powerful 1.8 L BP engine, dual airbags, a geared, torque-sensing limited slip differential, and other options. The new engine produced 98 kW (130 hp) and the standard model weighed 990 kilograms (2183 lb). In some markets such as the UK the 1.6 engine continued to be available as a lower-cost option, but was detuned to only 88 bhp to make it less competitive with the 1.8. Later 1.8 engines were up in power to 133 bhp due to the use of a more sophisticated engine management system (OBD-II).

There were a number of trim levels and special editions available. The standard model was called the "A Package" for the Miata models. A "B Package" added some options, while the "C Package" included a tan interior and top and leather seats. A special "R Package" was introduced for racing, and the annual special editions were formalized as "M Editions." These included all of the luxury options from the C package as well as special paint and, sometimes, special wheels. This generation was phased out in the 1997 model year, with the final 1500 NA Miatas produced being the "STO" ("Special Touring Option") versions. (These special editions refer to North American markets only.)

Worldwide
Mazda MX-5 SP
In 2001 Mazda Australia produced a limited run (100 cars) of turbocharged MX-5s labelled the SP. These were said to be the inspiration for the Mazdaspeed MX-5 however they only had an upgraded intake/turbo and exhaust unlike the Mazdaspeed MX-5 which has a stronger engine, gearbox and diff, with upgraded cooling system, interior and bodykit. Over 215 parts went into upgrading the performance of the SP creating a powerful sportscar that looked identical to a standard MX-5. The driveline, braking, suspension and engine internals remained standard. The upgraded engine was rated at 150 kW (201 hp).

Mazda Roadster Coupe
Mazda Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd. (Mazda E&T), a division of Mazda Japan, produced a limited run of Mazda Roadsters for the Japanese market with a permanent fixed hardtop roof. The body structure was reworked to incorporate the roof for a substantial increase in chassis rigidity and a weight increase of 10 kg. A range of models were produced, from a basic 1.6 L version, to heavily restyled boutique models. No Roadster Coupes were exported, though an example upgraded to Mazdaspeed specifications was shown to international audiences.

Design quirks and oddities
Since production began, over 700,000 Miatas have been made, leading the Guinness Book of Records to name it the world's best-selling sports car on February 13 2002.

Awards
The Miata has been on Car and Driver magazine's annual Ten Best list seven times: The NA from its introduction in 1990 through 1992; the NB on its introduction in 1998 as well as 1999 and 2001; and the NC on its introduction in 2006.
The NA was also Wheels Magazines Car of the Year for 1989 with the NC taking the award for 2005. Wheels Magazine also named the car the Best Overall Design in the 2006 Wheels Automotive Design Awards.

In the November 2004 edition of Sports Car International magazine, the Miata was chosen as the best sports car of the 1990s. In the March 2005 edition of the same magazine, the six-decade countdown culminated in the "Ten Best Sports Cars of All Time" issue, of which the Miata secured the number 10 spot, bested only by the likes of exotics and otherwise unobtainable icons of automotive history.

The NC was named the 2005-2006 Japan Car of the Year.
