The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan that was introduced by Subaru in February 1989 as a larger, more upscale companion to the Subaru Leone/Loyale. It came with a 2.0 L engine and was available with all wheel drive, which later became standard worldwide. In Australia, where it is sold as the Subaru Liberty (due to Australia's Legacy Clubs rejecting use of their name), it was Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 1994 and again for 1998.

In the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountain region and New England, the Legacy has gained considerable popularity as an icon of the outdoor lifestyle. The Legacy (and the Outback especially) typifies the outdoor lifestyle market in the US; this is an image of Subaru that differs greatly from that which the rest of the world has of it. The rise of the performance-oriented Impreza has done much to change the brand image in recent years, emphasizing performance and safety as well as utility.

On March 14, 2005, Subaru sold its three-millionth Legacy worldwide.
The AWD wagon is powered by a variety of 2.5 and 3.6 liter boxer engines producing anywhere between 170 to 265 hp. As a family hauler, it will come equipped with a host of electronic toys including radar based cruise control, GPS navigation, keyless entry with push button starting, and automatic windshield wipers. ===Third generation (2000-2004)===

Second generation (1995-1999)
All turbo models in North America ceased production with the introduction of the second generation Legacy, starting in 1995. The North American Outback model, with the help of clever marketing, halted declining sales and was instrumental in attracting investment interest from General Motors. GT models, first offered as a wagon trim package in 1994, became a full-blown upgrade in 1996, using the new DOHC 2.5 L engine. GT models continue to the present model, with Limited editions available, offering leather trim and a sunroof.

On April 23, 1998, a Subaru Legacy set a new world speed record for mass-produced turbocharged station wagons (1600 cc–2000 cc class), clocking 270.532 km/h over one kilometer on Highway 10 in La Junta, Colorado. This record was previously set by a Generation II Subaru Legacy in 1993 at 249.981 km/h.

First Generation/Origins (1990-1994)
In North America, the Legacy was introduced in 1990, with a 2.2 L engine driving front and all-wheel drive powertrains as options. Both sedan and wagon models were available. In 1991, a turbocharged sedan model became available, though its engine differed somewhat from that of other market offerings. A turbocharged wagon debuted in 1992 as a special edition.

The original Legacy speed record was set between January 2nd and 21st, 1989, with a Japanese-spec RS turbo sedan at the Arizona Test Center outside of Phoenix, Arizona. It broke the 100,000km FIA World Land Endurance Record by maintaining an average speed of 138.780 mph (223.345 km/h) for 447 hours, 44 minutes and 9.887 seconds, or 18 1/2 days. Pit stops were made every two hours with a driver change and refueling, while tire changes were made at 96 hour intervals, or every 13,400 miles driven.
Chassis codes
* Generation I: BC - Sedan, BF - Wagon
* Generation II: BD - Sedan, BG - Wagon
* Generation III: BE - Sedan, BH - Wagon
* Generation IV: BL - Sedan, BP - Wagon

(other similar chassis codes exist for VIN numbers in the North American market. BF may be shown as BJ on some Legacy wagons, for example. These chassis codes are almost universally recognized for the models they represent worldwide.)

Engines
The EJ-series engine was introduced first in the Legacy. It offers many important improvements over the previous engines, such as five main bearings instead of three. All Legacy engines are horizontally-opposed flat engines with at least one overhead cam per side. The great thing about the EJ series is its versatility - any EJ style engine will fit any subaru made between 1990 and 2006.
* 1.6 L & 1.8 L world-market four-cylinder engines exist. Some are likely to be carbureted, or feature a single central fuel injector.
* 2.0 L & 2.2 L fours were available in normally aspirated, fuel injected form in most markets. This is the most commonly used legacy engine. The 2.0L quad cam 16v version produces 123kW of power.
* 2.0 L turbocharged and intercooled fours have been a staple of the Legacy in world markets. Single and twin turbo models existed only in world markets, never available in North America. Twin turbos were used until 2003 when a single twin-scroll titanium turbocharger sourced from IHI and Mitsubishi- for automatic transmission models (and very similar to that used in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII onwards) was adopted by Subaru.
* 2.2 L turbocharged four-cylinder engines were available in the North American Legacy between 1991 and 1994. This was a unique version not equipped with an intercooler while featuring a single overhead camshaft. It has many resemblances to the RA-version engines in world markets.
* 2.5 L, DOHC, normally aspirated and fuel injected four-cylinder engines were available in the US market beginning in 1996. A revised version, with a single overhead camshaft, was available in North American models beginning in 2000. Some hybrid versions have been known to exist in Outback models during the 1998–99 years. World markets received versions of this engine with variable valve timing as early as 2001.
* 2.5 L, DOHC, turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder engines are available in North American market GT models, beginning in 2005. This engine shares many parts with other versions of the Impreza WRX STi, Forester XT and Baja Turbo, as well as the Outback XT which are available only in the North American market.
* 3.0 L, DOHC, normally-aspirated flat-6s became available in the Japanese market in 2000 and the North American market in 2001. This was a complete redesign, and shares only peripheral parts with earlier flat- or boxer-six engines. This engine is optionally available in the North American market Outback. An updated 3.0 L six, known as the EZ30R, features variable valve timing called AVCS. This version entered the North American market with the introduction of the 2005 Outback.

Performance models
Subaru has produced high performance versions of the Legacy with a Bilstein suspension and tuned turbocharged engines equivalent to the homologized rally version WRX STI (generating 205 kW on manufacturer's figures for the 2.0 L equivalent engine with manual transmission). Recent 3.0 L engines move close to the 2.0 L turbo output and share the Bilstein suspension. 2.0 L-engined turbocharged models with the Bilstein suspension were named either the GT-B (for wagons), or Spec B, or RSK-B4 (for sedans). The new 2003 model moved many models to simply B4 or even GT in some countries. The Spec B badge still exists in the UK, where the 3.0R stands as the premier MY06 model.

In North America, early sporty models were known simply as the Sport Sedan and Touring Wagon. Later models were given the GT and GT Limited nomenclature. The 2006 Legacy model brought forth a limited run of 500 Spec B models. This model features an improved suspension, navigation, larger wheels, and other driving and aerodynamic improvements over the GT model.

The new 2007 Legacy Spec B will be mass produced, unlike the limited production of 500 units from the '06 model within the US.

Motorsports
World Rally Championship
The Legacy was campaigned by Subaru in the WRC, with the help of Prodrive, beginning in 1990. It wasn't considered a truly competitive model at first, but showed promise under the command of Markku Alen, who in 1991 managed a third-place finish at the Swedish Rally. 1992 debuted the combination of experienced Group B, Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, and WRC driver Ari Vatanen, paired with the up-and-coming Scotish driver Colin McRae for Subaru's WRC effort. Two second place finishes, one by each driver, strengthened the commitment of Subaru to WRC, the Legacy, and their drivers.

1993 became a breakout year for Subaru as Colin McRae and Ari Vatanen pushed the Legacy to a third place finish at the Swedish Rally and a one-two placing after the first leg of the Acropolis Rally. Prodrive boss David Richards was eager to prove the potential of the new Impreza WRC car, but was charged with gaining a victory in the Legacy before the Impreza could debut. At Round 8, Subaru finally struck gold when McRae managed to hold back Francois Delecour in his Ford Escort for the win. This would be the last WRC event for the Legacy, as the Impreza debuted at the following event, where it placed second in the hands of Vatanen.

Richard Burns was successful in numerous events with the car during 1992 before joining the World Rally team to drive the Impreza in 1993. Alister McRae, Per Eklund, Possum Bourne and Hannu Mikkola also competed in the Legacy during its WRC participation.

Rallying
The Legacy remains an ever-present competitor in rallies around the world. SCCA ProRally and Rally America participation from many teams has been impressive. The Legacy and the Impreza have many interchangeable parts which makes for a very competent and reliable entry.

Worldwide
Models have typically been released into Japan and selected World markets such as New Zealand and Chile in advance of the Continental European and North American markets, perhaps because all three are right-hand drive markets.

* Generation I: 1989–1992
* Generation II: 1993–1997
* Generation III: 1998–2003
* Generation IV: 2003–present

The first generation Legacy was also sold in Japan by Isuzu as the Aska CX, from 1990 to 1994.

In Japan, the Legacy has a reputation for being an affordable, quick, and nimble car. Subaru is trying to follow the success of the Impreza worldwide with the Legacy, offering turbocharged models in Japan and the Americas. The latest Legacy model has never had a turbocharged version released in Europe due to emission problems.

Design quirks and oddities
* The exterior of the second-generation Legacy was designed by Olivier Boulay, who was hired by Subaru on a short-term basis. He would go on to participate in the design of the Maybach 57 and 62 and influence several Mitsubishi projects.
* The Legacy has many different trim levels in the Japanese market, with an assortment of different names (i.e. Brighton, Lancaster, Outback, and VZ to name a couple). Perhaps the most dubious one of all would be the 1993 Subaru Touring Bruce, named due to Bruce Willis lending himself to a home market advertising campaign.

According to Automotive Information Systems, the 2004 model of the Malibu received Green ratings in all categories but one. In the Starting and Charging category, the Malibu received a Yellow rating, indicating moderate problems.

*RECALL ALERT: On March 13, 2009, GM issued a recall alert affecting 276, 729 cars, namely all Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Pontiac G5, Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura and Saturn Outlook built for the 2009 model year, due to a loose clip on their transmission shift cable. This recall is filed under the NHTSA Campaign ID Number 09V073000.
Hybrid Models
A Hybrid version of the Chevrolet Malibu was introduced for the 2008 model year. It is powered by a Hybrid version of the base 2.4 L 4-cylinder.

Unique Attributes
Resale Values
According to Kelley Blue Book, "although Chevrolet has made big strides in quality and pricing, the Malibu and Malibu Maxx still lag behind the projected resale values of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and even the Hyundai Sonata."

Criticisms
*"Driving excitement is not part of the Malibu equation." - Automobile (2007)
*"With its inoffensively institutional design, the Malibu isn't going to turn any heads." - Car & Driver (2007)
*"If you're partial to Japanese-quality interiors, the Malibu probably won't cut it. Though clean, the overall interior is not up to the standard set by Mazda, Toyota and Hyundai. There is no manual transmission option, either." - Kelley Blue Book (2007)
*"The all-new Chevrolet Malibu has all the size, room, features, and conveniences a middle-of-the-market sedan needs to be competitive, and the fits and finishes inside and out are world-class." - JB car pages
The Malibu is redesigned for the 2008 model year. It is built on a revised version of the long-wheelbase Epsilon platform shared with the Saturn Aura and Pontiac G6. The Malibu is roomier than before, with a redesigned interior and more powerful engines.

The 2008 Malibu offers a 164 hp, 2.4 L inline-4 as the base engine, and a 252 hp, 3.6 L V6 as an option. Like the previous model, the 2008 Malibu range entails LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, however the 4-cylinder engine is also now available on the LTZ, and on that trim level it will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 models will all come with a six-speed automatic, however the 4-cylinder LS and LT models will continue to use a four-speed automatic. There is no indication a manual transmission will be offered. When the new Malibu arrives, Chevrolet will no longer offer the Malibu Maxx station wagon.

On December 18, 2006, photos of the next Malibu were accidentally leaked on the internet via the North American International Auto Show website. This was in addition to a preview shot leaked by GM earlier in the day, however the NAIAS photo showed the entire car, unlike the GM photo which only revealed the grille and headlamps.
The Malibu Maxx competes with the Dodge Magnum and other station wagons.

First Generation (1997-2003)
A new front-wheel drive Malibu was introduced in 1997 on an extended wheelbase version of the GM N platform with Pontiac Grand Am, Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Achieva, and Oldsmobile Alero. All N-body Malibus were produced at the Oklahoma City Assembly plant (after 2003 it was retooled to build the GMT360 SUVs) and the Wilmington Assembly plant (after 1999), before moving production to Lansing, Michigan. The Wilmington plant was then retooled to build the Saturn L-Series in 1999. The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a clone of the Malibu as a stopgap vehicle before the Oldsmobile Alero. It replaced the Chevrolet Corsica. Power came from a 2.4 L 150 hp (112 kW) I4 or 3.1 L 155 hp (116 kW) V6. The Malibu was Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year for 1997.

1997 to 1999 Malibus had a front grille with the Malibu logo in silver in the center; 2000 to 2003 models, including the Classic had the blue Chevrolet emblem on the front grille. 1997 to 1999 LS models were sometimes equipped with special gold-colored badges (the rear Malibu lettering and logo).

The 3.1 L V6 was updated in 2000 with 170 hp (127 kW) and the 4-cylinder was dropped.

The first Malibu was the top-line Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. 1964 was the very first production year of the Malibu (known to enthusiasts as the Chevelle Malibu).

*Mercury Comet/Montego
*Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite

1973-1977
The Malibu was restyled for the 1973 model year. Models included the base Chevelle Deluxe, mid-range Malibu and the top-line Laguna.

For 1974, the Deluxe was dropped, and the Malibu became the entry-level Chevelle. The Laguna trim package was replaced with the Malibu Classic. The Laguna S-3 model was introduced to replace the SS, and continued through 1976.

1978-1983
For the 1978 model year, the Malibu name replaced the Chevelle name on all mid-sized Chevrolets except the Monte Carlo coupe. This was a downsized version compared to previous mid-sized Chevrolets.

Three bodystyles were produced (station wagon, sedan, and coupe); the 2-door coupe (reminiscent of the 1964 Chevelle hardtop) was last produced in 1981. In recent years, the coupe has been sought after by drag racers and usually spotted as street machines.

Chevrolet did seem to consider a performance variant of the Malibu. A Malibu sport coupe called the Black Sterling appeared on the 1978 auto show circuit with a sharp black-over-silver two-tone paint, a spoiler at the rear, what looks like 15-inch wheels and tires and, presumably, the 350 V-8 that would only come in Malibu station wagons and El Caminos. The Black Sterling obviously never made it to production and seems to have disappeared from most people's memories.

A very rare 1980 Malibu M80 was a dealer package for only North and South Carolina in an effort to revive the muscle car era. It was however mostly aimed at Nascar fans who regularly traveled to Darlington Raceway. To this day, its unknown how many are left or were actually produced. There was no factory Malibu SS option available from 1978-83. The SS only came in the El Camino.

The 4-door Malibu was also used in fleets, especially for law enforcement usage. Right after the Chevrolet Nova ceased production, the 9C1 police option was transitioned over to the Malibu, filling a void for mid-sized police vehicles.

GM Canada also produced a special order of Malibu sedans around 1981 for the Iraqi government, although the order was cancelled. These Malibus were auctioned off at a greatly reduced price.

Engines
* 1980-1981 350 5.7 L (350 in³) V8
1980-1981-Chevrolet 3.8 liter V-6 2bbl

The 1982 Malibu shared GM's redesignated rear wheel drive G platform with cars like the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass. 1982 was the final year that a Malibu Classic was marketed; Malibus were produced as 4-door sedans until 1983 when it was replaced by the front wheel drive Chevrolet Celebrity.
The Pontiac G8 is a rear-wheel-drive, four-door sedan to be made by Pontiac as a 2008 year model vehicle and is also known as the Holden Commodore in Australia, the country of its origin. It is the sucessor to the Pontiac Grand Prix and Pontiac Bonneville.
Criticisms
Many on the new forum [www.g8board.com] have criticized the cars tailights and wheels more than anything else. As with the 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO, however, bumpers and lights can be swapped from the Austrailian version of the car, the Holden Commodore.

The Honda Pilot is the second SUV fully built and designed by Honda. The Honda Pilot is built in Alliston, Ontario, Canada and Lincoln, Alabama. Honda's initial SUV offering for many years was the Honda Passport, which was a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo. Where the Passport was truck-based, the Pilot shares underpinnings and the powertrain with the Acura MDX, which has a lineage tracing back to the Honda Odyssey minivan (itself based on the global light truck chassis). The Pilot’s unibody construction, however, is fortified with integrated perimeter frame rails, which helps it withstand light off-road use.

The Pilot was designed to fill a large American demand for SUVs. Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda only had the smaller CR-V based on the Civic platform, and the aforementioned Passport. However, the CR-V lacked in features many American consumers looked for in an SUV, which are overall size, passenger space, and towing capacity. The Pilot is at most designed to withstand light duty off roading. The Pilot has been a best-seller for Honda and is exclusively sold in North America, while Japan and Australia get its relative, the Honda MDX instead.
Recent Changes
*For 2009, Honda introduces the second generation Pilot. Remaining an 8 seater, the new pilot grows in size. Motivation now comes from an upgraded variant of Honda's 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 which pumps out 250 hp and 253 lbs-ft of torque (6 hp and 13 lbs-ft more than before). The engine also features a new version of Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management technology, allowing it to utilize all 6 cylinders for power or 4 or 3 pots for economy. This means that although larger and more powerful, the new pilot can still churn out at least 2 mpg better fuel consumption.

For 2006, the Honda Pilot got new front and rear fascias, an updated interior, and various standard safety features.

Like the MDX, the Pilot is propelled by an aluminum alloy 3.5 L SOHC, 24-valve VTEC V6 engine. The engine is rated at 250 hp and 253 ft·lbf of torque, and mated to a five-speed automatic. The Pilot weighs in at a little over 4,300 lb with front-wheel-drive and 4,600 lb with all-wheel-drive. Also, like the MDX, the Pilot rides on struts up front with a coil-spring, multi-link arrangement at the rear designed to allow a flat load floor. The Pilot has a 3,500 lb trailer towing capability.

Styles and Major Options
The Pilot is available in both two wheel drive and four wheel drive in LX,EX, EX-L, and Touring trims.
Gas Mileage
The new 2WD models are equipped with a standard Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that combines Pilot muscle with added efficiency. VCM is designed to boost mileage and economy without sacrificing power when and where you need it. While under light engine load conditions, the VCM system deactivates the three rear cylinders. This pioneering technology lets you go longer between fill-ups and enables an EPA highway rating of 24 MPG. Happy trails.

The 2WD gats an EPA estimated 17/23 MPG and the 4WD gets an estimated 16/22 MPG.

Reliability
The Honda Pilot comes with a 3 year/36,000 miles Limited Warranty and a 5 year/60,000 miles Limited Powertrain Warranty. Ordinary maintainance or adjustments, parts subject to normal wear and replacement, and certain items are excluded.

The Pilot ranks first overall in reviews of popular mid-size SUVs on Autos.com.

Safety
As evidence of Honda's dedication to safety, the Pilot has received a 5-star rating in frontal- and side-impact testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additional safety features have been added this year, including three-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensor and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with traction control. Plus, Pilot models with the navigation system feature a standard rearview camera that helps you watch for obstacles when you select the reverse gear.
First Generation (2003-2008)
The Honda Pilot was an all-new model for 2003. It came in two trims (LX and EX) and was initially only available as a 4WD model.

For 2004 the Pilot recieved added features including standard heated seats and heated side mirrors on EX-L models. Also the second row seats can now be adjusted fore and aft and third-row access has been improved.

For 2005 the Pilot recieved added features including a standard sunroof and six-disc CD changer for EX-L models. Also the Pilot recieved a new steering wheel design and added exterior colors. Engine power is alo increased to 255 horsepower, a tire pressure monitoring system and an all electronic Drive By Wire Throttle System are also newly added standard features.

For 2006, the exterior is slightly updated to incorporate design cues from the Ridgeline, while the interior gets a refreshening that includes new seat fabrics and a modified instrument panel design. Also, all trims of the Pilot include side curtain airbags as standard equipment. In addition, in the 2006 model year, a 2WD becomes available.

Worldwide
It is sold as the Honda MR-V in the Middle East exclusively.

Design quirks and oddities
Only for the 2005 model year, and only for the 2005 Pilot EX-L with rear seat DVD player, many Honda Pilot owners complained about the cluttered center dash due to the fact that it had 3 CD slots. One for the CD player, one for the CD changer and one for the DVD player. This minor design odditie was resolved for the 2006 model year, when the pilots CD changer was integrated into the main radio system, eliminating the three CD slots and uncluttering the dash by only having one Disc insert slot for the CD changer and one for the DVD player.

The Toyota Highlander known as the Kluger in Japan, is a crossover vehicle that shares the same platform with the Toyota Camry. First introduced as a 2001 model in North America to fill in the segment between the Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota 4Runner, it comes in 5 and 7-seater configurations and is available in three trims: Base, Sport, and Limited. The Sport model was first added for 2006.

The Highlander is available with two engines: 3.5L V6 and 3.3L Hybrid. A 4-cylinder was available until the 2006 model year, but has been dropped since then. V6-powered models come equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission, while Hybrids use a continuously variable transmission.

Since 2004, the Highlander is available with optional third row seating. To accommodate the optional third row seating a depression had to be made in the trunk floor. On models without third row seating, the depression in the floor was made into a storage compartment. Prior to 2004 the spare tire was accessible from inside the vehicle where the third row seats are located, but beginning in 2004 the spare tire was relocated underneath the vehicle.

The Highlander is available with front-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive. Hybrid models are available with a part-time four-wheel drive system which Toyota refers to as 4WD-i.
Recent Changes
* The Toyota Highlander was completely redesigned for 2007. Larger on the inside and outside, it is available with a 3.5L V6 engine only. The Hybrid remains powered by the previous generation's 3.3l V6.
* Changes to the 2006 model include the introduction of the Hybrid version. Also a new Sport trim is available.
* For 2004 the Highlander received a new V6 borrowed from the Lexus RX330. The new 3.3L V6 makes 230-HP, 10 more than it's predecessor. The new 2.4L engine gets a 5-HP increase to 160. All 2004 Highlanders get four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes as well as a tire pressure monitoring system. A new option is the navigation system and the rear DVD entertainment system. There is also an available 3rd row seat and curtain airbags.

* For 2003 a full-size spare tire was standard. Limited models come with automatic climate control, power driver seat, and alloy wheels.
* For 2002 Toyota added a standard rear-seat armrest, cabin air filtration, and a redesigned center console. Models were differentiated by Base and Limited.

A coupé or coupe (from the French verb couper, to cut) is a car body style, the precise definition of which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and over time. Coupés are often sporty variants of sedan (also known as saloon) body styles, with doors commonly reduced from 4 to 2, and a close-coupled interior (i.e. the rear seat placed further forward than in a standard sedan) offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers in the front and two occasional passengers or children in the rear). Before the days of motorized vehicles, the word referred to the front or after compartment of a Continental stagecoach.

Pronunciation
In Europe (including the United Kingdom), the original French spelling, coupé, and a French pronunciation (English koo-pay), are used. The stress may be on either the first or second syllable; stressing the first syllable is the more Anglicized variant. Most speakers of North American English, at this time, pronounce coupé as "coop" and spell it without the acute accent (coupe). This was a gradual change from the original French pronunciation occuring prior to WWII. A very North American example of usage is the hot-rodders' term Deuce Coupe ("doose coop") used to refer to a 1932 Ford.

History
In the 19th century a coupé was a closed four-wheel horse-drawn carriage, cut (coupé) to eliminate the forward, rear-facing passenger seats, with a single seat inside for two persons behind the driver, who sat on a box outside. Commonly, a coupé had a fixed glass window in the front of the body, protected from road dirt by a high curving dashboard. A Landau is a coupé with a folding top.

Through the 1950s opening-roof convertible automobiles were sometimes called convertible coupés, but since the 1960s the term coupé has generally been applied exclusively to fixed-roof models. Coupés generally, but not necessarily, have two doors, although automobile makers have offered four-door coupés and three- and five-door hatchback coupés, as well. Modern coupés often have the styling feature of frameless doors, with the window glass sealing directly against a weather-strip on the main body.

The SAE distinguishes a coupé from a sedan primarily by interior volume; SAE standard J1100 defines a coupé as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 cubic-feet of rear interior volume. A car with a greater interior volume is technically a two-door sedan, not a coupé, even if it has only two doors. By this standard, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, and Mercedes-Benz CL-Class coupés are all two-door sedans. Only a few sources, however (including the magazine Car and Driver), use the two-door sedan label in this manner. Some car manufacturers may nonetheless choose to use the word coupé (or coupe) to describe such a model, e.g., the Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

Alternatively, a coupé is distinguished from a two-door sedan by the lack of a "B" pillar to support the roof. Sedans have an "A" pillar forward at the windscreen, a "B" pillar aft of the door, and a "C" pillar defining the aftermost roof support at the rear window. Thus with all side-windows down, a coupé would appear windowless from the "A" to the "C" pillars. These fixed-roof models are described as a hardtop. Targa top models are a variation on the convertible design.

During the 20th century the term was applied to various close-coupled automobiles.

Manufacturers have used the term coupé in several varieties, including:
;Club coupé: a coupé with a larger rear seat, which would today be called a two-door sedan.
;Business coupé: a coupé with no rear seat or a removable rear seat intended for traveling salespeople and other vendors who would be carrying their wares with them.
;Opéra coupé: a coupé with rear seats that are mounted in the sides of the body and fold downward for use.
;Sports coupé or berlinetta: a uniquely styled model with a sloping roof, sometimes sloping downward gradually in the rear in the style known as fastback.

;Four-door coupé: a sedan with classic coupé-like proportions. The designation was first applied to a low-roof model of the Rover P5 from 1962 until 1973, but was revived as recently as 2004 by the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
;Combi coupé: a body type from SAAB combining the coupé lines with large loading capacity.
;Sport Utility Coupé: an SUV with 2 doors and shortened wheelbase and body.
;Sport Activity Coupé: an SUV with 4 doors and a sloping roof.

With the growing popularity of the pillarless hardtop during the 1950s some automakers used the term coupé to refer to hardtop (rigid, rather than canvas, automobile roof) models and reserved the term sedan for their models with a "B" pillar. This definition was by no means universal, and has largely fallen out of use with near-demise of the hardtop. Similarly, a Rover P5 saloon model came in a body style with a lower roof that was called a coupé. Technically, it was cut, as the original definition required, but it was not a shorter car body.

Today "coupé" is becoming more of a marketing term for automotive manufacturers, ascribing the term to any vehicle with two or three doors, and perceived luxury or sporting appeal. This is because coupés in general are seen as sportier than sedans; hence a coupé would be marketed as a "sportier" vehicle than a two-door sedan. As well, while previous coupés were "simply line-extenders two-door variants of family sedans", new "coupés" often have different sheet metal and styling than their four-door counterparts.
