The [[Mazda]] '''Z''' engine family is an evolution of the [[Mazda B engine|B family]]. It started with 2.0 L and 2.3 L variants found in the [[Mazda3]], [[Mazda6]] and [[Ford Ranger]]. For 2004, Ford dropped its own ''[[Ford Zeta engine|Zeta]]'' [[Ford Zetec engine|Zetec]] engines in favor of Mazda's, naming the resulting engine the [[Ford Duratec engine|Duratec 20 and Duratec 23]].

Confusingly, Mazda also sells Ford's ''[[Ford Sigma engine|Sigma]]'' [[Ford Zetec engine|Zetec]] (which is unrelated to both the ''Zeta'' and Mazda Z family) as the [[#MZI|MZI]]. The [[#MZ-CD|MZ-CD]] [[diesel]] is also unrelated to the rest of the Z family.

The 1.5 L (1489 cc, 92 hp) '''Z5-DE''' was used in the 1995-1998 [[Mazda Protegé]], Mazda Lantis (Astina) and in Mazda Familia Neo (1994-1997). Bore and stroke were 75.3 mm and 83.6 mm. The Z5 was a totally new design and it became the basis for Mazda Z series of engines. The block is the same with the Mazda B series, particularly the B6 DOHC 2nd generation, except for the interal parts. It shares the same 2 piece oilpan, upper aluminum and lower stamped steel. JDM versions produce 97HP and some 110HP

==ZL/ZM==

The ZM engine is also known as the Z6, it is the evolution of the Z5 with round intake and exhaust ports.

The 1.5L (1498 cc, 130 hp) '''ZL-VE''' and 1.6 L (1598 cc, 105 hp) '''ZM-DE''' are closely related engines with an equal bore (78mm) and share some major parts. The ZL has a stroke of 78.4 mm whilst the ZM has 83.6 mm.
