Ford introduced the Bronco as its first SUV in 1966. It was one of the earliest American made SUVs and broke ground on creating an entirely new market for cars in the US. The Bronco was produced as a mid-size SUV until 1977 without any major modifications to the body or trim. Certain features as power steering, disc brakes, and larger engines were added through they years, but the design changes were subtle. Broncos continued to be produced from 1978 until 1996 as a full-size two door SUV. Today, there is a fairly large market for 1966-1977 Bronco parts and accessories, and many Broncos are being restored or used for offroading or rock-crawling.
Competitors to the First Generation 1966-1977 Bronco
Although the Bronco was the first SUV to sneak into the American automobile market, it was not the first SUV produced. There was the Scout produced by International Harvester, Jeepster by Jeep, and Land Rover, which were all produced before the Bronco came into the picture. The reason the Bronco became such a big hit, however, is because none of the other 4x4 vehicles offered any of the same luxuries as a passenger car that most Americans were used to driving. The Bronco bridged the gap between rugged 4x4 machines, and luxury driving cars. It offered people the ability to take their comfort offroad and explore the places they had never gone before. Today, 1966-1977 Broncos will be spotted far more often than these other early 4x4 vehicles. Broncos are known for their extreme performance in rock-crawling competitions, and are a popular choice for modifications.
Full Size Bronco 1978 to 1996
Design and Devlopment
Development of the full-size Bronco. The second-generation Broncos began their long history at Ford's Product Design Center in 1972. Code named "Project Short Horn", the designers and engineers at Ford were working on an all-new Bronco that would compete with and ultimately far surpass the extremely popular full-size Blazer from General Motors. Working with many sets of requirements imposed on them by Ford and learning from mistakes made by Chevrolet on the Blazer, the designers were able to come up with a vehicle that had many features never before seen in a sporty-utility vehicle. Ford required the new Bronco to be based on the new '73 F-100 and for it to be ready for the original release date of the 1974 model year. The new Bronco also had to use the F-100 doors with no modifications to save on production cost and had to have a removable hard top to compete with the Blazer.

It has been speculated by many that the onset of the 1973 OPEC oil embargo was by far the main reason that the introduction of the full-size Bronco was delayed until the 1978 model year. By 1977 the energy crisis had eased up and the first generation Broncos still being sold were terribly out dated by this time. Sales were sharply falling due to the extreme popularity of the much more modern and versatile Blazer. Ford also finally had a new, environmentally-friendly engine in use in its 4x4 trucks by 1977, the 351M/400, which could only mean one thing: The Full Size Bronco's time had finally come!

In mid 1977 Ford introduced the first full-size Broncos for the 1978 model year. The long awaited '78 Bronco was so popular that many people had to wait six months or longer to get one from their local Ford dealers. Consumers just couldn't get enough of them. Even the automobile and truck magazines of the time raved on and on about the new full-size Broncos. The '78 Bronco practically swept-the-boards with 4x4 and truck-of-the-year awards. Pickup, Van, & 4WD magazine even stated, "It's a guess, but perhaps a very safe bet, that Chevy, Dodge, and Jeep engineers have '78 Broncos in their labs now, taking a look and calculating ways and means for catching up".

1978 to 1979 Second Generation
1978 Ford released the first full size Bronco based on a fullsize truck platform it featured only 351ci 2BBL Modified V8 and optional 400ci 2BBL Modified V8 motors, full and part time 4wd,Dana 44 front,Ford 9" rear axles and New Process transfer case, they were available with 4 speed manual or a C6 3 speed automatic transmission, this generation continued through 1979 with the addition of square head lamps as standard previously only available on higher end models

The Mitsubishi Raider is a mid-size pickup truck from Mitsubishi Motors that debuted in the fall of 2005 as a 2006 model for the United States market. The Raider fills the gap in the Mitsubishi lineup since the discontinuation of the Mighty Max in 1996. The Raider is built in the United States by DaimlerChrysler and is related to the Dodge Dakota. Engine choices include a 4.7 L PowerTech V8 making 230 hp and 290 ft.lbf and a 3.7 L PowerTech V6 which produces 210 hp.

The name is recycled from the Dodge Raider SUV sold from 1987 to 1990, which was a rebadged Mitsubishi Montero.

Sales have been poor, with just 377 and 492 sold in January and February 2006, respectively, compared to 4,583 and 6,260 Dakotas. Mitsubishi dealers reportedly have a 6-month supply of Raiders on their lots, and the company has asked DaimlerChrysler to cut production. 9,861 Raiders were built in 2005, and just 297 more were built from the first of the year through March 11, 2006 according to Automotive News.
The Ford Ranger name is used on two distinct and unrelated pick-up truck lines by the Ford Motor Company:
* The North American Ford-designed compact pickup truck (documented here)
* The Mazda-designed compact pickup (documented at Mazda B-Series (International)) sold in more than 130 countries

In North America, the Ranger is Ford's entry-level pickup truck. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was used on versions of the Ford F-Series. The current line of Rangers was introduced in 1982 for the 1983 model year. It replaced the Ford Courier, an Americanized version of the Mazda B-Series. The compact Ranger was styled after the full-size Ford pickups, and is also offered with a four wheel drive option. The Ford Ranger is currently offered as a 2.3 litre I4, a 3.0 litre V6, and a potent 207 horsepower 4.0 litre V6. All transmissions are 5-speed w/overdrive and come with a choice of manual or automatic. The FX4 version comes with an 8.8 inch rear end, 3 skid plates, and Bilstein shocks. Prior to the 1983 model year, "Ranger" was a trim package available on full-size Ford pickups. This truck uses code R1 (for 2-door) and R4 (for 4-door) in the 5th and 6th positions of the VIN. The Mazda - Ford - Mazda truck saga came full circle in 1993 when the Mazda B-Series truck became a rebadged Ford Ranger in North America. Both vehicles are manufactured at Ford's Saint Paul, Minnesota Twin Cities Assembly Plant, which is scheduled to close in 2008. Ford's future product plans in the compact pickup market segment are expected to be announced closer to the end of Ford Ranger production in the Twin Cities, in 2008.
Current Generation: (1983–present)
Fourth generation (1998-Present)
For 1998 the Ranger got another redesign, giving it a longer wheelbase and a three-inch (76 mm) longer cab for the regular cab models. The 1995-97 interior was retained. The twin I-beam front suspension was replaced by a wishbone-style system and the front half of the frame was of "boxed", rather than C-channel construction. Rack and pinion steering was also added. The four-cylinder engine was bumped up to a 2.5 L SOHC I4 giving it a 6% increase in power than the old 2.3 L. It put out 120 hp (89 kW) and 149 lb·ft (202 N·m) of torque. That engine was replaced by a new DOHC 2.3 L Duratec I4 in mid-2001. 2001 also saw the pushrod 4.0 L V6 replaced by the SOHC version from the Explorer, bringing with it a beefier M5OD-R1HD manual transmission. In 2001, the Ranger received a facelift, including a new grille, hood, and front bumper, as well as updated headlights and taillights. In 2004 the Ranger received minor updates to the grille, hood, and front bumper. New front bucket seats were also added in 2004 to meet the new U.S. Federal safety requirements. In 2006 the Ranger received more minor updates to the grille, front turn signals and taillights, along with a bigger rear Ford logo that was now centered in the middle of the tailgate.

Third generation (1993-1997)
In 1993 there was another redesign, with a shape more aerodynamic than before. Overall the truck had smoother lines, and other changes included flush-mounted door glass, wider doors, and slight fender flares. The 1989-style dashboard remained, but the seats and door panels were new. The 2.9 L engine was discontinued. The Mazda M5OD-R1 was now the sole manual transmission option. A new "Splash" model was introduced, which had a flareside bed, unique aluminum wheels, and a special paint scheme. The 1993 Splash models were only available as a regular cab, later models could have either cab. The Mazda B-Series became a rebadged Ranger for the 1994 model year.

A number of changes were made for 1995. The dashboard was completely redesigned, and it allowed room for a passenger's side airbag, installed in 1996. The A4LD transmission was updated. 2.3 L and 3.0 L models got the 4R44E, while 4.0 L trucks got the 4R55E. The front brakes were changed to use the same 2-piston brake calipers as the second generation Explorer, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes were added as standard on 4x4 and 4.0 L models.

Second generation (1989-1992)
The truck received a facelift in 1989, which included flush composite headlamps, new front fenders, hood, and grille, along with some uprgrades to the frame. Inside, there was a modern new dashboard and steering column. Rear-wheel antilock brakes were added, and a 21 US gal (79 L/17 imp gal) fuel tank was now optional on extended-cab models.

The 2.0 L engine was discontinued, and the 2.3 L now had a distributorless ignition system with two spark plugs per cylinder, giving it a 14 hp (10 kW) boost. The three-speed automatics were dropped, leaving only the A4LD. The new 160 hp (119 kW) 4.0 L Cologne V6 was added to the option list for all models in 1990. The 145 hp (108 kW) 3.0 L Vulcan V6 was introduced to replace the 2.9 L Cologne in rear-wheel drive trucks later in 1990. With the new engines, the only manual transmission available was the 5-speed M5OD-R1.

The Ranger GT was discontinued, although Ford did build a prototype for 1990 powered by a 3.0 L SHO V6.

First Generation/Origins (1983-1988)
Ford began development of the Ranger in 1976, focusing on quality and fuel efficiency. The intent was to build a truck that was as capable as the full-size F-Series, but in a more economical package. The compact Ranger had styling similar to the full-size Ford pickups, used a similar architecture, and was offered with four-wheel drive. The ability to haul a four-foot-wide (1.2 m) sheet of plywood is a common standard for trucks. In the compact Ranger, however, the space between the wheel wells was less than four feet; Ford designed the box with provisions to allow hauling of a standard sheet of plywood.[5]

The Ranger was introduced in mid-1982 for the 1983 model year. Available engines were the 72 hp (54 kW) 2.0 L and 86 hp (64 kW) 2.3 L OHC four-cylinders, a four-cylinder 59 hp (44 kW) 2.2 L Mazda/Perkins diesel, and a 115 hp (86 kW) 2.8 L Cologne V6. In 1985, a Mitsubishi-built 2.3 L turbodiesel with 86 hp (64 kW) replaced the Mazda diesel engine, and in 1986, the 2.8 L engine was replaced with a 140 hp (104 kW) 2.9 L Cologne V6. The SuperCab was introduced in 1986, offering an extra 17 inches (432 mm) of storage space behind the front seats, with a pair of jump seats available as an option. Many interior parts such as steering wheels and window cranks were shared with other Fords such as the Escort.

Mid-year 1986 saw the introduction of the Ranger GT. Only available as a standard cab short bed, it had the 2.9 L Cologne V6 with either a 5-speed Toyo Kogyo manual transmission or an optional A4LD automatic transmission putting power to a Traction-Lok differential with a 3.73 gear ratio. Inside, the truck was equipped with special bucket seats, full instrument cluster, and an optional center console. Front and rear sway bars were installed, and 14x6 aluminum wheels completed the package. A long bed option was added for 1987, and a new ground effects package was introduced in 1988
The Ford Ranger name is used on two distinct and unrelated pick-up truck lines by the Ford Motor Company:

A long bed option was added for 1987, and a new ground effects package was introduced in 1988
The Ford Ranger name is used on two distinct and unrelated pick-up truck lines by the Ford Motor Company:

The Ford Expedition is a fullsize SUV built by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced in 1997 and redesigned for 2003 and again for 2007, it slots between the smaller Ford Explorer, and the now discontinued Ford Excursion. The Expedition offers up to nine passenger seating and a range of V8 engines. It is similar to the Lincoln Navigator, especially for 2004 with the introduction of the Limited trim line, only to be suceeded in 2007 by the King Ranch trim line. One million Expeditions have sold since 2004, reflecting high consumer demand for its family-friendly interior, cargo space, and high towing capacity. A specially modified Special Service Vehicle version is also available from Ford for law enforcement. All Expeditions were built in Wayne, Michigan from 1997 to 2009, when it moved production to its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky. This SUV (especially the larger EL model for 2007) is once again Ford's top-of-the-line SUV.

See Wikicars' comprehensive Ford Expedition Review.

Recent Changes
The Expedition has been completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. The new model resembles the trucks from its F-Series, with a three-bar grille, large headlights, and domed hood. The biggest difference, however, may be in its dimensions. The 2007-present Expedition offers a choice between the stock model and an EL, or Extended Length, version, which lengthens the wheelbase by 12" and increases cargo capacity by 24 cubic feet.

Features and upgrades
For the 2009 model year, both the Expedition and Expedition EL added new features. Among them the Ford Sync entertainment system and Sirius Travel Link. Both are standard on Eddie Bauer, Limited and King Ranch and optional on XLT. In addition, Flexible Fuel capability became standard on all trims, allowing the vehicles to take gasoline, E85 (85% Ethanol/15% gasoline), or any combination of the two, along with a capless fuel filler tank, a post-crash alert system and a perimeter alarm.

Starting with the 2010 model year, Ford's MyKey and trailer sway control became standard on all trims. Also, the optional packages were renamed to Rapid Specificated Order Codes and upgraded with additional features (100s for XLT, 200s for Eddie Bauer, 300s for Limited, 400s for King Ranch) for the newer models.

Styles and Major Options
The 2010 Expedition is available in two body styles and four trims. ===Safety===
The 2007 Expedition was not tested for side-impact, but results on the NHTSA website show that it received 5-Star ratings for all front-impact crash tests. Additionally, the Expedition earned a 3-Star rating for 2WD rollover and a 4-Star rating for 4WD.

Hybrid Models
There are no hybrid models of the expedition in production at this time. Ford does however, produce a hybrid version of the Escape, the Ford Escape Hybrid.

Unique Attributes
Resale Values
According to Kelley Bue Book, "over a five-year period, Kelley Blue Book expects the Expedition to retain only an average residual value rating, behind that of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Pathfinder, but on par with the Dodge Durango.

Criticisms
*"We've never been big fans of the Expedition, finding it unwieldy and ponderous to drive." - Automobile
*"Front seats offer a myriad of power adjustments, but I had trouble finding a comfortable setting." - New Car Test Drive
*"...emergency handling maneuvers reveal the effects of Expedition's 4,900-pound or higher curb weight." - Edmunds.com
*"...comfortable seating in the first two rows;... [but] the third row is cramped for all but smaller children." - New Car Test Drive
*"If you really need the use of the third-row seat and need to load a lot of cargo, you may be better off with the longer Chevrolet Suburban or a used Ford Excursion." - Kelley Blue Book

Current Generation: (2007–present)
For 2007, the Expedition was redesigned, utilizing the T1 platform originally launched with the F-150. The new platform provides 10% more torsional rigidity than the previous model, and includes the independent rear suspension. As in previous years, the Expedition is powered by the 5.4 L Triton V8 engine, rated at 300 hp and 365 lbf·ft (495 N·m) of torque, which when properly equipped can tow up to 9,100 lb (4,130 kg). In addition, a 4.6 L V8 gas-electric hybrid, rated the same for both power and torgue as the 5.4 L, and a 4.5 L V8 diesel engine, rated at 300+ hp and 450 lbf·ft, was available for the 2007 lineup.

The 2007 Expedition was unveiled at the Houston Auto Show rather than at Detroit, Los Angeles, or New York where most new models are, as 20% of all Expedition sales are in Texas. The first 2007 Expedition to roll off a Ford assembly line was donated by Ford to the Peter family of Jamaica, Queens as part of an episode of the ABC series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition that aired May 7, 2006.

For the 2008 model year, Power deployable/retractable running boards became available, along with a Rear View backup camera system. The camera, which is mounted under the Expedition’s center liftgate appliqué, utilizes the Gentex auto dimming rear view mirror’s picture-in-mirror technology to display what it sees.

For the 2009 models, additional features included the now standard FlexFuel capability, which can take gasoline, E85 (85% ethanol/15% gasoline), or any combination of the two, and the newly installed EasyFuel capless fuel-filler system. The 5.4L V8/FlexFuel feature also upgraded its torque power to 310hp and 365lb-ft. The 2009 models also boosted its maxium towing capacity to 9200 lbs. for its 4x2, and up to 9000 lbs for the 4x4.

The new entertainment features added to the 2009 models included Ford SYNC, a voice-activated, multi-entertainment system, a optional navigational system, and the newly compatible Sirius Travel Link. With the exception of the 2007-2009 XLT models that were built at the Wayne assembly plant only, the steering wheels also has tilt feature and radio controls, including Ford SYNC buttons, allowing the driver to press the button and use voice commands to activate the system. That feature would be added to the XLT trims that were built at the Louisville assembly from 2009 onward.

The 2010 models will continue to offer the same features that were added from the 2007 to 2009 model year. The only minor additions include Ford's new MyKey and Trailer Sway Control as standard on all trims and the renaming of optional packages to Rapid Specificated Order Codes, with upgrading numbers (100s for XLT, 200s for Eddie Bauer, 300s for Limited, 400s for King Ranch) for the newer models.

From 1997 up to 2008, the Wayne, Michigan plant handled production of the Expedition. But in 2009, all current and future Ford Expedition models were moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville along with its the Lincoln Navigator, as they join the Ford F-Series Super Duty production line. That plant used to build the Ford Excursion until 2005.

Expedition EL
An extended-wheelbase version of the Expedition, called the Expedition EL (for "extended length"), replaced the cancelled Excursion in 2007. At first it was supposed to be called the Everest but Ford changed their minds at the last minute. However, Ford now uses the Everest name for its SUVs in Asia.

It is expected to compete more effectively with the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL. The Expedition EL is about 15.8 in (40 cm) longer than the standard Expedition, for a total of approximately 222 in (18.5 feet or 563 cm), and has a 131 in (333 cm) wheelbase, producing 24 ft³ of additional cargo space over the standard 119 in (302 cm) wheelbase model. It was launched with the standard wheelbase 2007 Expedition in summer 2006. The Expedition EL can be distinguished by its longer rear-quarter windows; and the rear passenger doors do not cut into the aft wheel well trim.

The Expedition was designed to compete with both the larger Chevrolet Suburban, and the smaller Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, as well as the Toyota Land Cruiser (despite being in a different class). It replaced the fullsize Ford Bronco. Seating capacity ranged up to nine passengers with the third-row rear seat option, and the Expedition could tow 8,000 lb (3,600 kg). The Expedition was refreshed in 1999 with more power and updated trim.
Worldwide
The standard size Expedition are sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, The CMNI, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, The Philippines, The Middle East, Central America, The Caribbean, South America (Except Argentina and Brazil), Cambodia, Mongolia and South Korea.

Outside North America, including the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, the Expedition EL is also imported to and sold in The Middle East and the Philippines, where in the latter the EL version is the only type of Expedition that is imported and sold there. Ironically, The Philippines is also where Ford also sells the Everest SUV.

As with the US version, both the Expedition and Expedition EL comes in 4 trim lines: XLT, Eddie Bauer, Limited, and the King Ranch series. All four versions of the standard Expedition are sold internationally. However, with the EL, this version and its trims is limited in Canada (Eddie Bauer, Limited and King Ranch versions only), Mexico (Limited version only), The Middle East (XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited versions only) and The Philippines (Eddie Bauer version only).
