The Audi RS6 is the highest-performance version of Audi's A6 model. There is currently no production version of this car since the introduction of the newest A6 model although a replacement is currently in testing for production.
Recent Changes
* A week before its Official unveiling at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, pictures of the new 2008 Audi RS6 Avant leaked into the internet - ahead even of its sedan sibling. However, as of yet there are no official details accompanying the images aside from the long-standing speculation of the true output of the RS6's twin-turbo TFSI V10 engine.
Current Generation: (2007–present)
New versions of the RS6 are in development. First spyshots of the car have already been taken.. The new RS6 will be based on the new Audi A6 platform introduced in 2005 and it will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2007 in both sedan and Avant (station wagon) versions. The engine is reportedly based on the same 5.2 liter V10 model as the Audi S6's but it may be turbocharged or twin-turbocharged with an expected output of around 520 - 550 horsepower.

First Generation/Origins (2002-2004)
The original Audi RS6 was the top-of-the-line of the 2nd generation (1997-2005) A6, and was available as both a sedan and a wagon (called Avant by Audi). It was second at the top of the A6 lineup, above the A6 2.7T and 4.2 and the lesser S6, and was exceeded in power and price only by the Audi RS6 Plus. It effectively replaced both the S6 4.2 and S6 Plus models of 1995.

The RS6 featured a twin-turbocharged version of the corporate 4.2 Litre V8 engine tuned by Cosworth Technologies (Now known as Mahle Powertrain), which had originally been developed for the 1994 A8. With the aid of the turbochargers, output rose to 444 hp (331 kW) and 415 ft·lbf (560 Nm) of torque. The combination of the V-8 and the turbochargers helped give the RS6 an exceptionally wide power band, with peak torque available from 1950 to 5600 RPMs.

The RS6 was available only with Audi's Quattro All-Wheel Drive system and a 5-speed "Tiptronic" transmission, the same unit that was being used in the W12 powered A8, chosen because none of Audi's manual transmissions could cope with the RS6's high torque output. The RS6 also served as the debut model for Audi's Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) system. The system is mainly mechanical, and uses a pump to keep pressure in the shock abosorbers during cornering to counteract rolling and pitching. The system is "intelligent", it is able to adjust the stiffness at each shock absorber constantly to maintain both a comfortable ride and high grip. However, DRC's main advantage is that it operates without the need for most of the complicated electronics required in similar systems from Mercedes-Benz and other competitors.

According to testing by Car and Driver, the RS6 can accelerate from 0 - 60 mph (0 - 96.6 km/h) in just 4.3 seconds, 0 - 100 mph in 10.7 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), however the vehicle can reportedly hit 180 miles per hour or more in unlimited form. It can stop from 60 mph (96.6 to 0 km/h) in 118 feet (35.97m), thanks to its large 365/335 mm (14.4/13.2 in) front/rear brakes, and an uncommon eight-piston design in the front.

There was also an RS6 Plus version of the car producing over 480 bhp and topping 180 mph. The car came only as an avant and was sold only in European markets. It lasted for just one model year but quickly sold out once it was released.

While about 8000 RS6s were produced worldwide, approximately 1,200 units were sold in North America. A small community of RS6 owners exists in North America and some refer to the vehicle as "The Beast" or "The Lord of the Rings" (in reference to Audi's interlocking ring logo). RS stands for RennSport - Racing in German, fitting as the RS line of cars from Audi are the most performance oriented of all Audis.

The Audi RS2 Avant was a limited edition, high performance Audi station wagon sold from 1994 to 1996. Collaboratively designed by Audi and Porsche and built on Audi's 80 Avant, it was the company's first "RS" vehicle and the first of their high performance Avants; it used the most powerful and most thoroughly developed version of the company's turbocharged 5-cylinder engine, and was unmatched in performance among both wagons and 4-doored sedans at the time of its release.

Although it was never exported outside of continental Europe, the RS2 has amassed an impressive cult following worldwide, and it is often regarded as being the vehicle that finally firmly established Audi as a producer of practical high performance vehicles; its wagon body and standard all-wheel-drive system made it useable as a comfortable daily driver even in poor weather conditions.

History
The RS2 was the product of a co-development project between Audi and Porsche, based on Audi's 80 Avant (station wagon) and powered by a modified version of their 2.2 litre, 20-valve turbocharged 5-cylinder engine producing 315 PS (232 kW) at 6500 rpm. Although much of the car's underpinings were manufactured by Audi, assembly was handled by Porsche at their plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany which had become available after discontinuation of the Mercedes-Benz 500E, which Porsche had manufactured under contract.

Like the rest of the vehicle, the RS2's 5-cylinder engine was based on a unit that Audi already produced, although Porsche considerablly modified the engine; the stock KKK turbocharger was switched for a larger unit along with a heavy-duty intercooler and higher flow fuel injectors, a newly designed camshaft, a more efficient induction system and a low-pressure exhaust system replaced the standard fare; a new Bosch-supplied engine management computer controlled the engine.

With so much power available, the RS2 could run from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and achieve a maximum speed of 163 mph [restricted], despite weighing over 1400 kg. In a road test conducted in 1995, British car magazine Autocar timed the RS2 from 0 to 30 mph at just 1.5 seconds, which they confirmed was faster than both the F1 road car and also Jacque Villeneuve's Formula 1 car of that time. Even by more modern standards, its performance is exceptional; it could accerlate on-par with the C5 generation Chevrolet Corvette and was only a tenth of a second slower to 60 than a 996 generation Porsche 911.

Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system was standard, and Porsche-designed braking and suspension systems replaced the standard Audi 80 equipment. 1.6 inches (4 cm) lower than a stock 80 Avant, the suspension and braking upgrades combined to give the RS2 the handling and braking capabilities of a high-end sports car; 17 inch (432 mm) wheels and high performance 245/40ZR17Dunlop tires were standard as well. In fact, the braking system wore Porsche badged Brembo calipers and both the wheels and side mirrors were identical in design to those of the 964 Turbo. Additionally, the word "PORSCHE" is inscribed in the RS2 emblem affixed to the trunk.

A 3-spoke leather steering wheel, Recaro sports-bucket seats (available in full-leather or a leather/suede combination) and console materials in either Wood or Carbon Trim rounded out the vehicle's interior changes.

Approximately 2200 RS2s were to be built initially, but due to demand the total was 2891 cars built. Of these, only 180 were right hand drive cars built for the UK market. Audi also produced an S2, which was available both as a station wagon and a coupe. It featured a similar turbocharged 2.2-liter 5-cylinder engine which delivered 220hp(3B engine) or 230hp(ABY engine).
