The standard front shoulder belts were deleted in 1970's GM cars equipped with airbags but lap belts were still used for side impact and rollover protection. The standard "FASTEN SEAT BELTS" warning light and the infamous ''seat belt starter interlock'' (mandatory equipment on the 1974 and early 1975 automobiles sold in the United States) were also deleted when airbags were ordered.

	The 1970s fleet of 10,000 airbag-equipped GM experienced seven fatalities. One is now suspected to have been caused by the airbag.
