It is a full-size luxury sedan and was introduced in 1998, four years after the A8's introduction to the European market. It is only available as a four-door saloon/sedan. Its main market competitor is the [[Mercedes-Benz S-Class|Mercedes-Benz S63/65 AMG]], and the [[BMW 7 Series|BMW Alpina B7]].
