The Smith and Mabley Manufacturing Co. of New York City built their first car in 1904, which was called the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;S&amp;amp;M Simplex&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, and went bankrupt in 1906. By 1907 the firm&amp;#039;s assets were absorbed into the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Simplex Automobile Co.&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; Herman Broesel purchased the company and the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;quot;Simplex&amp;quot;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; would be able to go 90 m.p.h. under his direction, as he was passionate about racing. The firm became &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Crane-Simplex&amp;#039;&amp;#039; after purchase of the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Crane Motor Car Company&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in 1915. The vertically-mounted water-cooled [[straight-4]], situated at the front of the car, produced 18&amp;amp;nbsp;hp (13.4&amp;amp;nbsp;kW).  A 4-speed transmission was fitted.  The wood and angle iron-framed car weighed 1200&amp;amp;nbsp;lb (544&amp;amp;nbsp;kg).  The car used a honeycomb radiator with a fan.&lt;br /&gt;
