			On July 25th, 2009 in the second round of qualifying in the Hungarian Grand Prix Massa was struck on the helmet by a suspension spring that had fallen from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn, on a high-speed part of the track. He subsequently crashed head on into a tyre wall. He was moved to the trackside hospital and Ferrari's team principal later stated that Massa was in a stable condition and would not participate in the race on the following day. It was subsequently announced that he had suffered a fractured skull and brain concussion, as well as a gash on his forehead, and that he had undergone successful surgery on his injuries at the AEK hospital in Budapest.

			Massa's neurosurgeon, Róbert Veres, has said that as a result of his injuries, the Brazilian's 2009 season is over, and that his future as a motorsport driver is in doubt as there is no guarantee that his eyesight will not be affected. However, the hospital's medical director, Péter Bazsó, clarified this, stating that damage to Massa's eye cannot be assessed until he is able to open it. He also stated that, at this pace of recovery, he could leave hospital ten days after the accident. Massa's personal doctor, Dino Altmann, also the chief medical officer for the Brazilian Grand Prix, stated on July 28 that Massa has managed to open his left eye and can see out of it. Massa also managed to speak to his family and Ferrari bosses in Portuguese, Italian and English. Altmann says he is certain that Massa will be able to race again. Massa left the Intensive-care unit on July 29. According to his friend Popó Bueno, Massa is already able to walk and has been asking doctors about when he'll be able to race again. Ferrari has announced that Massa's former teammate, [[Michael Schumacher]], will take over Massa's race seat while he recovers. According to Felipe Massa's father, Luiz Antonio, he should leave hospital no later than August 2, and if his recovery continues to go this well he could go straight home to Monaco, instead of being transferred to a clinic in Paris.
